In providing financial confirmation to the live-service title’s reputation as one of the worst overall disasters in the history of video games, Warner Bros. Discovery has admitted that the absolute failure of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League has ultimately resulted in a $200 million hit to their bottom line.

During Warner Bros. Discovery’s Q1 2024 earnings call on May 9th, CEO David Zaslav and CFO Gunnar Wiedenfels acknowledged the failure of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, resulting in a $200 million loss. Zaslav addressed the issue first, mentioning the setback in the gaming group’s financials following the disappointing release of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League in Q1, overshadowing the success of Hogwarts Legacy the previous year.

In a subsequent breakdown of the studio’s quarterly financials, Wiedenfels elaborated on the significant decline of over $400 million year-over-year in Q1, attributing it primarily to the challenging comparison against the success of Hogwarts Legacy in the previous year’s first quarter. He emphasized the impact of the disappointing release of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League in the current quarter, which led to a $200 million hit to EBITDA.

As per the mentioned earnings release, Warner Bros. Discovery’s studio segment, encompassing video games, television, theatrical, and home entertainment, experienced a staggering 70% drop in EBITDA compared to the prior year quarter. Plunging from $607 million in 2023 to a mere $184 million in 2024, this decline was predominantly attributed to the failure of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League. The company managed to partially offset the damage through theatrical revenue from Dune: Part Two and home entertainment revenue from Wonka and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom.

Interestingly, Warner Bros. Discovery’s acknowledgment of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League’s failure isn’t new, despite this being the first detailed financial disclosure. During the previous Q4 2023 earnings call on February 23rd, Wiedenfels had already addressed the underperformance of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League. He highlighted the challenging comparison against the success of Hogwarts Legacy and acknowledged the game’s failure to meet expectations, setting up a tough year-over-year comparison for the games business in Q1 2024.

Moreover, Wiedenfels revealed that the Studio segment would face additional challenges before fully recovering from Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League’s disappointing performance. He mentioned the burden of marketing campaigns for Dune: Part Two and Godzilla vs. Kong in Q1, which would impact the segment’s finances even further.

The outcome hardly shocks considering the game’s poorly crafted narrative, uninspired gameplay, and money-grabbing monetization tactics. Player backlash against Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League is evident across social media platforms and particularly glaring in its dismal performance on Steam.

At present, the game struggles to maintain traction, with a mere 150 peak players over a 24-hour period. Even more telling, its monthly peak, occurring almost three months post-release, hovers just above 591 players.
