Insomniac Games’ Spider-Man 2 took fans on a thrilling ride with its portrayal of Venom, though not without its twists. While the anticipation was high for Venom’s role, the game surprised many by making Harry Osborn the villain, a move that divided opinions among fans familiar with the comics.
Despite the excitement, Venom’s presence in the sequel was notably limited. Players had only sporadic encounters with the symbiote after a brief battle with Kraven the Hunter. Speculation suggests content may have been trimmed to meet deadlines.
Yet, the design of Venom remained a standout achievement for Insomniac Games. Recently, artist Dustin Brown offered fresh insights into the character’s creation, showcasing a new perspective on the fan-favourite symbiote.
“Venom created for Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, based on concept art by Daryl Mandryk,” he said. “All character art production by me, however this was a huge collaborative effort between many people across many disciplines. I feel genuinely fortunate to have had the opportunity to work alongside and learn from each and every one of them.”
“Regarding the wings, credit for inspiration clearly has to go to the incredible work done by Donny Cates and Ryan Stegman for their ‘King in Black’ series. Those guys are the absolute GOATs.”
“I am sincerely grateful to the many teammates across all departments for their help, guidance and support in bringing this character to it’s final state,” Brown concluded. “I’d also like to thank Insomniac Games, our friends at Marvel Games and Sony Interactive Entertainment. Their extensive knowledge and guidance consistently prove to be invaluable.”
Last year, Insomniac Games faced a significant setback with a massive hack, casting uncertainty over several leaked projects. The cancellation of the multiplayer title “Spider-Man: The Great Web” left fans disappointed, and the status of DLC and spin-offs remains unclear.
