Following the immense success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie, The Legend of Zelda is now set to receive its own live-action adaptation. Directed by Wes Ball, known for his work on the upcoming sequel Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, the Zelda film is generating significant buzz.

During a discussion about Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes at WonderCon with CBR’s Kevin Polowy, Ball cautiously touched on his involvement in the Legend of Zelda movie. While he remained tight-lipped about specific details, Ball hinted at his intention to create something “special” with the project. Regarding casting, Ball neither confirmed nor denied its commencement, indicating that further developments would likely unfold after the release of Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes.

Legend of Zelda

When questioned about The Legend of Zelda, Ball responded cautiously, stating, “I can’t really say anything. I’ve learned in the past that anything I say gets sort of taken out of context. It’s probably safer that I say nothing until we have something to say, which I’m sure will come at some point. But obviously, I’m very thrilled and happy to be a part of this thing. It’s been a [lifelong] dream for me, basically… to be part of a Legend of Zelda movie. It’s amazing. So, we’re going to work hard and do something special.”

No news on casting, yet!

When questioned about the project’s status, including whether casting had commenced, Ball replied, “No comment. Let me finish [Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes] first… I’ve got to see how this movie’s going to end, and then I can go look at the next big giant franchise.”

Kingdom of the Planet of Apes

While fans will have to wait to find out more details about The Legend of Zelda‘s feature film adaptation, they’ll soon be able to catch the newest movie from Ball. Directed by Ball and written by Josh Friedman, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is heading to theatres in May. It’s connected to the previous Apes movies, serving as a sequel to 2017’s War for the Planet of the Apes, but it’s set centuries into the future. Owen Teague stars as a young chimpanzee who teams up with a feral human (Freya Allen) in a new world dominated by ape clans.

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes will be released on May 10, 2024.
