This time around, Daisy Ridley brings a more seasoned perspective to her return to the Star Wars universe. In a recent interview, she candidly discusses her decision to come back, emphasizing that it was an easy choice and revealing her enthusiasm for revisiting the iconic franchise.

“It wasn’t a difficult decision,” Ridley told Empire about reprising her role as Rey Skywalker while discussing her new biopic movie, Young Woman and the Sea. Although she didn’t immediately accept the offer, Ridley shared that Kathleen Kennedy of Lucasfilm gave her the space to consider it. “It was actually really funny,” she added, recounting how her best friend joked about the possibility of a Rey TV show on their way to meet Kennedy. “And then I called him and I was like, ‘You will never guess what.’ Why wouldn’t I [do it]?”

Despite acknowledging the divisive nature of the Star Wars sequel trilogy among fans, Ridley also emphasized the love and joy it brings to many. Reflecting on her return to the role of Rey Skywalker, she expressed both excitement and a sense of challenge. “It feels pretty amazing to be able to continue a character — like, can I even remember how to play her?” she mused. “It’s an interesting challenge as an actor to come back to something and try to figure out what’s changed for me and what’s changed for her.”

Maturity also played a significant role in her decision to return. Ridley noted how, during the release of Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens — her first major Hollywood project — she “certainly did not feel like an adult at the time.” However, with personal and professional growth over the years, she now approaches the role from a different perspective. “There’s just a lot of joy with me and these films,” she added. “Honestly, if I wasn’t excited, I wouldn’t have done it. It feels like a great thing to be part of.”

Since last year, Lucasfilm has announced a new slate of upcoming Star Wars films, including James Mangold’s Jedi origin film and a theatrical continuation of The Mandalorian. On the TV side, the franchise’ new anthology series Tales of the Empire will drop on Star Wars Day, while its first live-action High Republic show, The Acolyte, comes out in June.

Star Wars: New Jedi Order is currently scheduled for a 2026 release.
