After two years of speculations for who would voice the character, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 has found its Shadow. Talks have swirled over who would bring the iconic video game character to life for the threequel, with everyone from Keanu Reeves to Hayden Christensen speculated as landing the part. Even original game actor Jason Griffith was considered by some as a viable choice given Sonic the Hedgehog 2 cast Colleen O’Shaughnessey to reprise her role as Tails, continuing on in both the next movie and the Knuckles spinoff show.
The Hollywood Reporter has brought word that Keanu Reeves has joined the Sonic the Hedgehog 3 cast as Shadow. Rumors had been ongoing about who would play the iconic hedgehog in the two years since the previous sequel released and introduced him in the mid-credits. The news also comes on the heels of the first footage of the movie being shown at CinemaCon, which showed Jim Carrey’s return as Dr. Robotnik and teased Shadow’s introduction to Sonic, Tails and Knuckles.
Reeves’ Shadow Casting Is Perfect For Sonic 3

Reeves’ casting as Shadow in Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is not just an anticipated announcement; it’s an exciting update for the threequel. His involvement brings more than just his enduring popularity from franchises like The Matrix and John Wick. Following the trend set by Idris Elba’s portrayal of Knuckles in the predecessor, Reeves adds depth to the character of the antihero hedgehog.
Elba’s interpretation of Knuckles in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 was a delightful departure from the traditional, presenting a hilariously goofy take on the echidna, reminiscent of Dave Bautista’s portrayal of Drax in the Guardians of the Galaxy series. Reeves, known for his versatility in both dramatic and comedic roles, including his memorable cameo in the rom-com Always Be My Maybe, is well-equipped to bring Shadow to life.
His portrayal of Batman in the animated DC League of Super-Pets demonstrates his ability to balance humor with depth, making him the ideal choice for the role of Shadow in the upcoming threequel.

Similar to the Dark Knight, Shadow is known for his brooding and intense demeanor, which has garnered both admiration and criticism. As Sonic the Hedgehog 3 approaches, Reeves and the film’s creators have an opportunity to approach the character with a self-awareness akin to League of Super-Pets and Knuckles. This approach could infuse the movie with humour while staying faithful to the beloved character’s essence, pleasing longtime fans.
