After initial rumours circulated about a sequel to the Five Nights at Freddy’s movie, the news has been officially confirmed. Blumhouse Productions and Universal Pictures announced at CinemaCon that the sequel is indeed in development.
According to Variety, Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 is slated for a Fall 2025 release, although an exact date has not yet been disclosed. Details regarding the plot, returning actors, and characters from the first movie remain under wraps. It’s also unclear whether the sequel will retain the simple title of Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 or adopt a different name.
Despite the lack of specifics, fans eager for more of the franchise’s lore explored in a cinematic setting can anticipate the sequel’s arrival next fall.

“I know they’re in the process right now of nailing down the story, and they want to get going as soon as possible,” original Five Nights at Freddy’s movie star Josh Hutcherson, who played security guard Mike Schmidt, told Variety in January about a sequel. “Obviously, the fans are amazing and die-hard. For me to be a part of it was so cool and phenomenal.”
In a previous interview from December, co-star Matthew Lillard, who played the villain William Afton, added, “I don’t know if it’s gonna be greenlit, it certainly hasn’t been greenlit for me, but the expectation is that they will be making more, and in success, it’s Hollywood, they’ll make a lot more. So, that’s exciting.”
The Five Nights at Freddy’s film adaptation, based on Scott Cawthon’s popular video game series, was helmed by director Emma Tammi. Cawthon collaborated on the screenplay with Tammi and Seth Cuddeback, while also serving as a producer alongside Jason Blum.

The star-studded cast includes Josh Hutcherson, Elizabeth Lail, Piper Rubio, Mary Stuart Masterson, and Matthew Lillard. Additionally, the film featured special guest appearances from renowned YouTubers like CoryxKenshin and MatPat.
Interestingly, while Markiplier didn’t make an appearance in the first film, there’s speculation that he might secure a cameo in the sequel.
The Sequel Is Officially Happening
The sequel’s official green light owes much to the financial triumph of its predecessor. The original film amassed over $297 million globally, surpassing expectations and establishing itself as Blumhouse’s highest-grossing release ever, all on a modest $20 million budget.
While critical reception was lukewarm, with a Rotten Tomatoes score of 32 percent, audience acclaim soared with an impressive 87% score. This divergence underscores the franchise’s strong fan base and its ability to resonate with audiences.
For those eager to revisit the world of animatronic horrors, the original Five Nights at Freddy’s is currently available for streaming on Prime Video.
