Amidst the whirlwind of reactions to Lionsgate’s remake of ‘The Crow’, the first trailer has garnered a staggering 88,000 dislikes on YouTube. In response, the director of the beloved ’90s adaptation has taken to social media to share his thoughts once again.
Last week, Lionsgate unleashed the first trailer for its re-adaptation of ‘The Crow,’ sparking a wave of mixed reactions from fans. While some remained open-minded about the updated take on the material, the majority expressed disappointment over the departure from the moody, Gothic atmosphere of the ’90s film. Critics particularly took issue with the seemingly generic supernatural action movie vibe and the unconventional song choice.
Alex Proyas, the director behind the original film, had previously voiced his lukewarm sentiments towards the remake. Now, he has taken to social media once again to address the trailer’s divisive reception, noting its rapid accumulation of dislikes on YouTube. Within just one day online, the trailer amassed over 50,000 dislikes, a number that has since surged to 88,000.
“I really don’t get any joy from seeing negativity about any fellow filmmaker’s work,” the director began. “And I’m certain the cast and crew really had all good intentions, as we all do on any film. So it pains me to say any more on this topic, but I think the fan’s response speaks volumes. THE CROW is not just a movie. Brandon Lee died making it, and it was finished as a testament to his lost brilliance and tragic loss. It is his legacy. That’s how it should remain. The sheer amount of dislikes on The Crow remake’s trailer might be a bad sign for how the movie will perform.”
