After only five weekends in theatres, Sony Pictures has called it quits on Madame Web, marking the film as an even greater disappointment than 2022’s Morbius. Discover the final box office figures after the jump…
Madame Web premiered on Valentine’s Day, but just over a month later, Sony Pictures has officially pulled the plug on its latest Marvel venture after a lackluster five-week stint in theatres.
Its recent digital release has only fueled further mockery on social media, echoing the lukewarm reception it received during its theatrical run. With an estimated production cost exceeding $100 million, it’s understandable why Sony is eager to put this comic book adaptation behind them.

Closing its theatrical chapter this weekend, Madame Web barely scraped together $43 million in North America, a stark $30 million shortfall compared to Morbius’ 2022 earnings.
Sony Pictures will likely gauge the performance of Kraven the Hunter and Venom: The Last Dance later this year before committing to future projects. However, the studio’s handling of these live-action adaptations appears shaky at best, with Spider-Man remaining a beacon of hope as a shared character with Marvel Studios.
At least, for the time being.
Recently, Madame Web lead Dakota Johnson said she’s “not surprised” the movie flopped with critics, adding that, “It was definitely an experience for me to make [Madame Web]. I had never done anything like it before. I probably will never do anything like it again because I don’t make sense in that world. And I know that now.”
“But sometimes in this industry, you sign on to something, and it’s one thing and then as you’re making it, it becomes a completely different thing, and you’re like, ‘Wait, what?’” the actress continued. “But it was a real learning experience, and of course it’s not nice to be a part of something that’s ripped to shreds, but I can’t say that I don’t understand.”
In a departure from the usual superhero fare, Madame Web delves into the enigmatic origins of one of Marvel’s most intriguing heroines.
This suspenseful thriller follows Dakota Johnson as Cassandra Webb, a Manhattan paramedic grappling with possible clairvoyant abilities. As she unravels the mysteries of her past, she forms a bond with three young women whose destinies hold immense power, provided they can survive the perils of the present.
Starring an ensemble cast including Sydney Sweeney, Celeste O’Connor, Isabela Merced, Tahar Rahim, Mike Epps, Emma Roberts, and Adam Scott, Madame Web is now captivating audiences in theatres worldwide.
