Quietly, Disney has confirmed that Avengers 5 will not retain the title of Avengers: The Kang Dynasty.
Disney has announced that Avengers 5 will undergo a title change, a decision that comes amidst legal issues involving Jonathan Majors.
Previously, reports surfaced suggesting that Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, the fifth installment in the Avengers franchise, would no longer retain its title. While it remains uncertain if Kang will remain part of the film’s narrative, it’s speculated that a new actor would assume the role, as Marvel Studios severed ties with Majors following his conviction for assault and harassment allegations.
According to The Direct, Disney has officially confirmed the new title for the film, which will now simply be referred to as Avengers 5, aligning with previous reports of the title alteration.
The announcement was made during an investors’ presentation, where Disney showcased a timeline for the upcoming Marvel Studios releases. While the sixth instalment remains labelled as Avengers: Secret Wars, the fifth movie has been temporarily dubbed Avengers 5 on the board, awaiting a final title decision. The presentation also highlighted the film’s scheduled release for May 2026, following previous delays.
While it’s tempting to link the title change to the controversy surrounding Kang actor Jonathan Majors, there are other factors at play. Reports suggest that Marvel Studios executives were already contemplating a pivot away from featuring Kang as the primary antagonist, especially after the lukewarm reception to Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania in theaters.
As for the new official title, it might remain under wraps for some time. Additionally, the fate of Kang’s character and whether he will be recast remain uncertain. However, rumours have circulated regarding potential contenders for the role, with names like Colman Domingo surfacing.
A new writer has been assigned to Avengers 5.
Avengers 5 is undergoing a significant transformation with the introduction of a new writer. Initially, Destin Daniel Cretton, known for his work on Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, was attached to the project before shifting focus to a Shang-Chi sequel and other MCU endeavors. Following Cretton’s departure, Michael Waldron, the creator of the Loki series, was brought in to pen the script for Avengers 5. Notably, Waldron was originally slated to write Avengers: Secret Wars before assuming responsibility for both films.
Originally planned for a 2025 release, Avengers 5 has been rescheduled to hit theaters on May 1, 2026. Its release will precede that of Avengers: Secret Wars, slated for May 7, 2027.
