Yesterday, Lionsgate’s remake/reimagining of The Crow unveiled its first trailer, which has swiftly amassed a staggering 53,000 dislikes on YouTube…
Yesterday marked the release of the first trailer for Lionsgate’s and director Rupert Sanders’ fresh take on The Crow, and it’s safe to say that opinions are split.
Given the fervent dedication of fans to Alex Proyas’ cherished ’90s adaptation starring the late Brandon Lee, any attempt at remaking or reinterpreting The Crow was bound to face intense scrutiny. The initial promotional images, particularly featuring Bill Skarsgård as Eric Draven, had already sparked considerable backlash.
But was the trailer truly deserving of such criticism?
Of course, perspectives vary, yet beyond the decision to depart from the moody, Gothic ambiance of the original (not to mention the curious song choice), this teaser exudes a generic supernatural action film vibe, leaving fans hungry for something more.
While some might argue that the response has been unduly harsh, the numbers speak volumes: within just over 24 hours online, the trailer has garnered a staggering 53,000 dislikes, overshadowing its 42,000 likes on YouTube.
Take another peek at the trailer below and judge for yourself.
Rochelle Davis, known for her portrayal of Sarah in the original film, recently shared her thoughts with TMZ about the new images, expressing a blunt initial reaction: “Yuck.”
While Davis holds no qualms about Bill Skarsgård’s casting or acting abilities, she believes his appearance fails to capture the essence of Eric Draven, a character she describes as “a good man with a good soul.” She criticized the new rendition as “dingy, dirty, and grungy,” asserting that Skarsgård’s portrayal resembles more of the villains he’s meant to combat rather than the titular character.
Davis also voiced concerns about the lack of diversity in the new film, suggesting that casting someone other than a straight white male would have been a more respectful choice, particularly considering the legacy of Brandon Lee. She emphasized the importance of honoring Lee’s memory through casting decisions.
The synopsis for the remake reads: “Soulmates Eric Draven (Skarsgård) and Shelly Webster (FKA twigs) are brutally murdered when the demons of her dark past catch up with them. Given the chance to save his true love by sacrificing himself, Eric sets out to seek merciless revenge on their killers, traversing the worlds of the living and the dead to put the wrong things right.”
Aside from Skarsgård and FKA twigs, the film will feature Danny Huston, Laura Birn, Sami Bouajila, and Jordan Bolger in undisclosed roles. The script was penned by Zach Baylin and Will Schneider.
The Crow’s new adaptation is set to hit theatres on June 7, 2024.
