After the Krakoan Age: Marvel Comics Unveils X-Men Relaunch, Introducing Three Ongoing Titles: X-Men, Uncanny X-Men, and Exceptional X-Men.
Marvel Comics is bidding farewell to the X-Men’s Krakoan Age later this year, but the journey is far from over for these beloved characters. Today, it’s been revealed that the team’s new era will revolve around three flagship titles.
Leading the charge are Jed Mackay and Ryan Stegman’s X-Men, Gail Simone and David Marquez’s Uncanny X-Men, and Eve L. Ewing and Carmen Carnero’s Exceptional X-Men. Each promises a unique exploration of the mutant mythos as they navigate uncharted territories within Marvel’s universe.
In X-Men, stationed at their new headquarters in Alaska, the team defiantly raises their banner. Cyclops, Beast, Magneto, Psylocke, Kid Omega, Temper (formerly Oya), Magik, and Juggernaut unite against emerging threats, fiercely advocating for the destiny and philosophy of mutantkind. For them, mutant affairs are paramount.
“It’s not just those three titles in this relaunch, there’s a lot!” MacKay teased. “[My X-Men title] is where we’ll see the first inklings of what the X-Men will look like in 2024. I’m very excited for you guys to see it when it comes out.”
“If you look at that line-up, they’re a group of people who are not well suited to integrating into the world. And in these books, we’ll see what that means and what it looks like going forward.”
Meanwhile, in Uncanny X-Men, this team is set to establish a home in the vibrant streets of the Big Easy, safeguarding a world that harbors both hatred and fear towards them. Fans will embark on thrilling adventures alongside Rogue, Gambit, Nightcrawler, Jubilee, and Wolverine as they once again rise to the occasion, showcasing the trademark X-Men flair in their endeavours to protect the day.
“I think X-Fans are special in that we identify with having something different about us,” Simon teases, “and you’re going to feel that in this book, and what it means to have that thing about you that’s different, or exceptional. We go deep into the emotional part of that.”
In the realm of Exceptional X-Men, Kate Pryde finds herself returning to her roots in Chicago after the conflict with Orchis. Despite her recent detachment from the world of mutants, fate intervenes as she encounters a trio of fledgling mutants—Bronze, Axo, and Melee—desperately in need of mentorship and direction. However, Kate’s plans are complicated by the unexpected involvement of Emma Frost, who shares similar intentions for the young mutants.
“Long-time fans of Kitty Pryde can count on the kinds of adventures you expect from her as a classic favorite, while I hope new and old readers alike will get to love this all-new team of young mutants,” Ewing shared. “Kitty, the one-time kid sister figure of the X-Men, has to reckon with her own memories – good and bad – of being a child of Xavier as she navigates a role as leader and mentor for a new generation of mutants who are trying to make their way in a time of crisis.”
This lineup offers something for every X-Men fan, though a few notable names are noticeably absent. While Magneto looms large in the shadows of X-Men, there’s no trace of Professor X, Jean Grey, or other key figures who have shaped the Krakoan Age. Nevertheless, forthcoming titles like Phoenix, X-Factor, Storm, NYX, X-Force, and Wolverine suggest ample opportunities for their inclusion.
Despite the absence of some heavy hitters, the initial roster remains impressive. Fans may notice striking similarities between the heroes of Uncanny X-Men and those from the beloved X-Men ’97 series!
