According to insider Daniel Richtman, Sony is in the works on two upcoming animated Marvel superhero films, one of which will feature a female protagonist.

Recent reports suggest that “Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse” won’t mark the end of Sony Pictures’ ventures into animated Marvel territory.

Insider Daniel Richtman, as reported by ComicBookMovie.com, has unveiled Sony’s plans for at least two more animated Spider-Man projects. Among these is a film centred around Spider-Man’s notorious rogues gallery, and another featuring a female protagonist. Notably, the female-led Spider-Man movie is distinct from the previously announced Spider-Woman project, which Sony unveiled in 2018.

Back in November 2018, Sony Pictures Animation announced the female-led spinoff alongside a sequel to “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” (later titled “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” for release in 2023). Although details have been scarce since the initial announcement, Spider-Man producer Amy Pascal hinted at the focus on Gwen Stacy/Spider-Woman, along with the introduction of Silk and Jessica Drew/Spider-Woman. Bek Smith was attached to write the screenplay, while Lauren Montgomery, known for her work on “Batman: Year One,” was set to direct.

Miles Morales Voice Actor Open to Fourth Spider-Verse Movie

Miles Morales SpiderVerse

Sony Pictures Animation is currently immersed in the production of “Beyond the Spider-Verse,” the concluding chapter of the Spider-Verse trilogy led by Miles Morales/Spider-Man. Recently, Shameik Moore, the voice of Miles in the animated series, was quizzed about the possibility of a fourth installment. While Moore expressed uncertainty about the franchise’s future, he affirmed his willingness to participate if a fourth movie were to be announced.

Regarding Miles Morales’ potential debut in live-action, producer Amy Pascal disclosed that it would occur post-“Beyond the Spider-Verse” and the upcoming “Spider-Man 4” starring Tom Holland. However, insider Daniel Richtman reports discussions between Sony and Marvel about integrating Miles Morales into Holland’s “Spider-Man 4,” although specifics of his involvement remain undisclosed. “Spider-Man 4” is anticipated to follow Holland’s Peter Parker after the events of 2021’s “Spider-Man: No Way Home.

The Spider-Verse Movies Have Been Wildly Successful

Sony Pictures has struck gold with its Spider-Verse franchise, as both “Into the Spider-Verse” and “Across the Spider-Verse” have proven to be massive hits at the box office. Together, these two Spider-Man films have amassed over $1 billion in global ticket sales, solidifying their status as commercial juggernauts.

Critically, the Spider-Verse saga has also garnered acclaim, with both installments earning certification as “fresh” on the review aggregation platform Rotten Tomatoes. “Into the Spider-Verse” particularly stood out, clinching prestigious awards including the Golden Globe, Critics’ Choice, and an Oscar for Best Animated Feature Film. Notably, it became only the 6th non-Disney/Pixar film to secure this honor at the Academy Awards.

Now, the excitement continues as “Across the Spider-Verse” vies for the title of Best Animated Feature at the upcoming Academy Awards ceremony on March 10th. With the Spider-Verse franchise soaring to new heights of success, fans eagerly anticipate what’s next for this groundbreaking series.
