Significant Week 2 Drop: Dakota Johnson’s Madame Web Struggles at Domestic Box Office in the New Sony Spider-Man Universe Movie.
Madame Web, the latest installment in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe, starring Dakota Johnson as clairvoyant paramedic Cassie Webb, has faced a significant setback in its second week at the box office.

Despite opening midweek during the Valentine’s Day holiday, the superhero feature struggled to make an impact, earning a lackluster 3-day opening weekend total of $15.3 million. Even factoring in its head start, its 6-day total marked the franchise’s lowest opening gross.
Now, per Deadline reports, Madame Web has slipped from second to fourth place on the domestic chart in its second weekend, with a projected 3-day gross of $5.56 million. The cumulative domestic total is expected to reach $35 million by Sunday, falling far short of its reported $80 million budget. To break even, the film will need to earn at least $160 million.
This marks a significant 64% drop from the movie’s opening weekend, indicating a challenging road ahead for Madame Web at the box office.
Comparing Madame Web’s Week 2 Drop to Other Sony Spider-Man Universe Films

While a 64% drop in box office revenue may seem disappointing for a blockbuster, especially considering its substantial budget, Madame Web’s performance actually ranks as the second-best drop within Sony’s Spider-Man Universe thus far. This franchise currently consists of four movies, with two more (Kraven the Hunter and Venom 3) slated for release before year’s end. Below, take a look at how Madame Web’s decline compares to that of previous franchise entries:

Madame Web’s Week 2 drop shows a slight improvement compared to Venom: Let There Be Carnage, which saw a notably lower gross than its predecessor in the Venom sub-franchise. Despite Venom 2’s stronger opening weekend, its second-weekend earnings of $31.8 million still surpassed Madame Web’s meager $5.56 million take. A similar trend is observed with Morbius, which managed a $10.2 million second-weekend haul despite suffering from a catastrophic drop – the worst in franchise history.
These figures paint a grim picture for Madame Web. Struggling to reach the $100 million mark worldwide, let alone the necessary $160 million threshold to break even, the movie faces an uphill battle. With major blockbusters like Dune: Part Two, Kung Fu Panda 4, and Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire slated for release throughout March, competition is fierce, making it increasingly unlikely for Madame Web to recoup its investment.
As Madame Web grapples with its disappointing box office performance and uncertain future, the question remains: can it overcome the odds and find success in the midst of fierce competition? Will it manage to surpass the $100 million milestone worldwide and ultimately reach profitability?
