The live-action Masters of the Universe reboot, previously abandoned by Netflix, is now back on track with the addition of new talent to the project.

The long-awaited live-action reboot of Masters of the Universe seems to be gaining momentum after departing from its original home at Netflix.

According to Deadline, Mattel’s live-action Masters of the Universe reboot is picking up speed once again. Travis Knight (known for Bumblebee) is reportedly in final negotiations to take on the director’s role. The screenplay is undergoing a rewrite by Chris Butler, director and co-writer of ParaNorman, following a previous draft by David Callaham, Aaron Nee, and Adam Nee. Robbie Brenner of Mattel will produce alongside Todd Black and Jason Blumenthal of Escape Artists.

Initially in development at Netflix, the project was later abandoned by the streaming platform. Reports surfaced that Amazon MGM Studios showed interest, and now, Deadline states that the company is in the final stages of securing the rights. While previous reports suggested a theatrical release, it’s unclear if the film will debut on Prime Video or head to theaters like the upcoming Road House remake.

Drawing inspiration from the animated series He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, the reboot follows 9-year-old Prince Adam’s journey. After crashing on Earth and being separated from his Magical Sword, Adam returns to Eternia nearly two decades later to defend his home against Skeletor. But to succeed, he must unravel the mysteries of his past and become He-Man.

Travis Knight, known for his work in both live-action and animation, appears to be a fitting choice for the director’s chair. As CEO of Laika, he led projects like Coraline and Kubo and the Two Strings before transitioning to live-action with Bumblebee. Knight is currently working on the stop-motion film Wildwood.
