Director Takashi Yamazaki’s “Godzilla Minus One” came tantalizingly close to claiming the second spot on the list of highest-grossing foreign-language films in North America but ultimately fell short.

After diligently tracking the remarkable box office journey of “Godzilla Minus One,” and as the TOHO kaiju film geared up to exit North American theatres, we observed its potential to surpass the 1998 Italian comedy “Life Is Beautiful” and secure the runner-up position on the highest-grossing foreign-language films list in North America.
Regrettably, “Minus One” narrowly missed the mark. With a final tally of $56.418M in North America, it fell just shy of the $57.2M earned by “Life is Beautiful” in 1998. Surpassing the #1 highest-grossing foreign-language film, 2000’s “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon,” which earned $128M in North America alone, was never within reach for “Minus One.”
Nevertheless, achieving this level of success for a film initially slated for just a one-week limited theatrical run is commendable. Strong word of mouth and sustained box office earnings extended that initial week to a remarkable nine-week run.
Director Takashi Yamazaki and the cast and crew of the film recently rejoiced in the celebration of its Oscar nomination, marking a historic first for the Godzilla franchise.
The nomination comes in the category of Best Visual Effects, pitting the film against formidable contenders like The Creator, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One, and Napoleon. This recognition marks a significant milestone for the iconic franchise.
