It’s been over two years since Nathan Drake graced the big screen in Sony Pictures’ live-action adaptation of Uncharted. Directed by Ruben Fleischer, the blockbuster grossed over $400 million worldwide on a $120 million budget, making it a box office hit for Sony.
The idea of a sequel has been eagerly discussed by Sony and those involved in the first film. Tom Rothman, chairman of Sony Pictures, previously referred to Uncharted as a new movie franchise for Sony, and director Ruben Fleischer has shown interest in returning for another film.
Until now, official information has been scarce. While there hasn’t been a formal announcement, Sony Pictures gave a studio presentation at the 2024 CineEurope trade show on Monday, revealing several film projects in development. Among the projects mentioned by Sony’s President of International Distribution, Steven O’Dell, was another Uncharted movie. Unfortunately, no further details were provided beyond the confirmation that the sequel is happening.
Sony’s Uncharted movie adaptation stars Tom Holland as Nathan Drake and Mark Wahlberg as Victor Sullivan, with supporting roles played by Sophia Ali, Tati Gabrielle, and Antonio Banderas. Inspired by the blockbuster video game franchise, the film follows street-smart Nathan Drake, who is recruited by seasoned treasure hunter Victor “Sully” Sullivan to recover a 500-year-old lost fortune amassed by explorer Ferdinand Magellan. They face competition from corrupt billionaire Santiago Moncada and mercenary leader Jo Braddock. Like the video games, Uncharted is an action-packed, globe-trotting adventure filled with massive set pieces.
Despite the COVID-19 pandemic impacting its theatrical release, Uncharted still achieved box office success. The film grossed over $407 million globally, making it the fifth-highest-grossing video game movie of all time. Critics gave it a mixed reception, with a 40% score on Rotten Tomatoes, but fans loved it, as shown by its 90% audience score.
“Promisingly cast but misleadingly titled, Uncharted mines its bestselling source material to produce a disappointing echo of superior adventure films,” the critics consensus reads. The audience round-up, meanwhile, praises the film’s action and terrific cast, calling it a “solid adaptation of the games — and a fun throwback to classic adventure movies of the past.”
As of now, no release date for the next Uncharted movie has been announced. However, it’s reassuring to know that a sequel is still in the works.
