Universal Pictures has started filming the next Jurassic World movie, which promises a back-to-basics approach for this latest instalment in the franchise.
Universal Pictures has fast-tracked its next Jurassic World movie, and just a couple of months after the project was announced, production is now underway in Thailand. According to Variety, the movie will also utilize locations in Malta and the U.K.
Directed by Gareth Edwards, known for his work on Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and Godzilla, the film boasts a star-studded cast including Jonathan Bailey, Manuel Garcia-Rulfo, Mahershala Ali, Rupert Friend, Luna Blaise, and David Iacono. Scarlett Johansson, fresh off her long tenure as a key player in Marvel Studios’ MCU, takes the lead role, marking her return to franchise filmmaking. Details about Johansson’s character remain undisclosed.
Though specific plot details are under wraps, the general premise has been revealed. The movie is described as “a completely fresh take, launching a new Jurassic era, following three adults and three teens getting stuck on the Island.” This approach harkens back to the original Jurassic Park, focusing on survival and adventure in a dinosaur-filled setting. The island in question is assumed to be part of the Muertes Archipelago, also known as The Five Deaths.
The working title for the movie is reportedly “Jurassic World 4” with rumors suggesting it might also be called “Jurassic City.”
The month-long production in Thailand was confirmed by Jaturon Phakdeewanit, the country’s Department of Tourism director general. Filming will take place from June 13 to July 16 at various locations, including Bangkok, Trang, Phang Nga, Phuket, and Chiang Mai.
David Leitch was initially in talks to direct the new Jurassic World movie in early February. However, just a few days later, he parted ways with the project. Reports suggest that Leitch felt his creative input would be minimal due to the film’s fast-tracked status and the producers’ desire to have a stronger hand in its direction following their experiences with Jurassic World: Dominion.
Colin Trevorrow, who directed Jurassic World: Dominion, will not be involved in this new installment. However, he did share his vision for the franchise’s future last year. “The previous five films are plots about dinosaurs. This one is a story about characters in a world in which they coexist with dinosaurs,” Trevorrow explained. “For the franchise to be able to move forward – because it’s inherently unfranchisable, there probably should have only been one Jurassic Park – but if we’re gonna do it, how can I allow them to tell stories in a world in which dinosaurs exist, as opposed to, here’s another reason why we’re going to an island?”
This new direction aims to refresh the franchise by focusing more on character-driven narratives within a world where dinosaurs are a part of everyday life, rather than repeatedly returning to isolated islands.
“Four years after the destruction of Isla Nublar, dinosaurs now live and hunt alongside humans all over the world. This fragile balance will reshape the future and determine, once and for all, whether human beings are to remain the apex predators on a planet they now share with history’s most fearsome creatures.”
