The long-awaited G.I. Joe and Transformers crossover movie has made significant progress, with a key addition to its creative team. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Derek Connolly has been tapped to write the script for the highly anticipated crossover.

Connolly brings a wealth of franchise experience to the project. He is best known for his collaborations with director Colin Trevorrow, having co-written the screenplays for all three installments of the Jurassic World trilogy. His impressive resume also includes contributions to the story of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, as well as work on Kong: Skull Island, Detective Pikachu, and Deep Cover. Additionally, Connolly has been involved in the development of the upcoming Legend of Zelda movie.

The highly anticipated G.I. Joe and Transformers crossover movie is set to follow the events of 2023’s Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, which teased the new film in its ending. Reportedly, the crossover will “pit the good guys — the robots in disguise Autobots and heroic Joes — against their archenemies, the dastardly Decepticons and the conniving terrorist organization Cobra.”

While a team-up of these two iconic toy lines has occurred in comic book form, starting with a Marvel Comics title in 1987, it has never been realized on screens, big or small. This film marks the first-time fans will see these beloved characters join forces in a live-action format.

The Crossover Was Set Up in the Last Movie

At the end of Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, Anthony Ramos’ character received an invitation to join the Joes, hinting at the crossover. However, it’s still unclear if Ramos will reprise his role in the new movie.

Casting details for the G.I. Joe and Transformers crossover remain sparse, leaving fans guessing which stars from the two franchises will appear. Recently, there have been reports that Marvel Cinematic Universe star Chris Hemsworth is in talks for a starring role, adding to the excitement surrounding the film.

“The Joes are going to be part of the ingredients now,” producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura teased about the new movie, per Sci-Fi & Fantasy Gazette. “We’re not going into the Joe world, they’re coming into our world. So, if you think about it that way, I think that’s the closest thing to the plan that we have. We now have to figure out the plot we want to do, etcetera, but they will be an active participant, if you would, a few of the characters, in trying to stop the bad guy.”

The crossover is produced by Lorenzo di Bonaventura, Mark Vahradian, Michael Bay, Tom DeSanto, and Don Murphy. Steven Spielberg will executive produce with Hasbro Entertainment.

A release date hasn’t yet been set for the untitled G.I.Joe and Transformers crossover film.
