Today at Ubisoft Forward 2024, fans were treated to an extensive look at the highly anticipated Star Wars Outlaws. Billed as the first-ever open-world Star Wars game, players will explore the galaxy as Kay Vess, a scoundrel seeking freedom and a new beginning.

A Glimpse into Kay Vess’s World

Previously, Ubisoft had released trailers and overviews for Star Wars Outlaws, but today’s footage stands out by fully demonstrating the game’s ambition and scope. The gameplay follows Kay Vess on a mission to find an expert gunslinger to help her upgrade her blaster skills.

Expert Quests and Immersive Gameplay

Game Director Mathias Karlson explains that expert quests are crucial for Kay Vess to learn new skills to survive the underworld. In this mission, she heads to Tatooine to locate a gunslinger. As an open-world action-adventure, this task is easier said than done.

Starting at Achra Station on Akiva

The footage begins with Vess on the planet Akiva at Achra Station, a trade hub for illegal contraband and a remnant from the Clone Wars. As Vess navigates the streets, Karlson notes it’s an excellent place to pick up supplies from syndicate-affiliated merchants if you’re in good standing.

Space Combat and Exploration

We then see Vess in her Trailblazer ship, showcasing space combat. “Each planet has its own system to explore and many opportunities to earn credits,” Mathias notes. Vess aids a Pyke freighter under pirate attack, improving her reputation with the Pyke syndicate and earning credits.

Arrival on Tatooine

Upon arriving on Tatooine, controlled by the Hutt Cartel, Vess gathers intel in a bustling Cantina about a deadly pirate with a blaster. This intel leads her to one of their storehouses. “Traveling to your destination can be an adventure in itself,” Karlson explains as we see Vess navigating the deserts on her speeder, encountering the planet’s mysteries.

Stealth and Combat

Reaching the storehouse, Vess must find a way in without triggering alarms. The gameplay showcases multiple mission approaches: Vess sneaks into the base, performs stealth takedowns with the help of her companion Nix, and engages in a full-blown shootout, displaying impressive blaster combat.

Conclusion of the Gameplay Preview

The preview concludes with Vess finding the expert she’s been searching for. This extended look at Star Wars Outlaws highlights Ubisoft and Massive Entertainment’s ambitious vision for the game, leaving fans eagerly anticipating its release.

In addition to the gameplay footage, Ubisoft also released more of a general overview trailer for Star Wars Outlaws that highlights the details of “what makes Kay an original scoundrel, the underworld setting, and the galaxy of opportunity that awaits”

Kay takes on high-risk, high-reward jobs to earn favor with the galaxy’s most notorious crime syndicates, including the cutthroat Pyke Syndicate, the crafty and cunning Crimson Dawn, amongst others. More of the locations Kay will explore are shown in detail in the video above, including the jungle world of Akiva, the ancient city of Kijimi, and the savannah moon of Toshara. There are flashbacks to Kay’s past growing up in Canto Bight, a memory of meeting Nix for the first time, and scenes of Kay hustling and thieving to survive.

Star Wars Outlaws launches on August 30, 2024, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
