During today’s Xbox Games Showcase, id Software unveiled their medieval-themed prequel to 2020’s Doom Eternal, titled Doom: The Dark Ages. The brief trailer showcased Doom Guy’s new look, complete with a furry Game of Thrones-style cape, along with some gameplay snippets and a planned release window in 2025.

The big highlight? Doom Guy (or the Slayer, if you prefer) wields an incredible combo weapon: a Captain America-style shield that doubles as a chainsaw, capable of bouncing between enemies. This alone is enough to get fans excited, but id Software is also elevating the game’s visual design. Expect shooter levels that resemble Metalcore album covers, featuring colossal fantasy spires and terrain made of giant demon skeletons, maintaining the series’ iconic aesthetic.

We also caught a glimpse of an on-brand weapon that turns skulls into live ammunition. PC Gamer Global Editor-in-Chief Evan Lahti has aptly dubbed it “a cerebral slapchop.”

release: “Take flight atop the fierce Mecha Dragon and stand tall in a massive Atlan mech as you beat titanic demons to a pulp.”

The reveal wasn’t entirely surprising, as the game’s name and concept leaked almost two weeks before Microsoft’s showcase. However, id Software’s Doom reboot series has been so successful that the excitement remains high.

Doom 2016 was a revelation, revitalizing the boomer shooter genre with its lightning-fast, acrobatic gameplay. It paved the way for the indie resurgence of old-school FPS games. Doom Eternal expanded on this success, introducing new mechanics, weapons, and challenging enemies like the infamous Marauder.

The Dark Ages is well-supported by the extensive lore established in the neo-Doom series. This lore is more about heavy metal fun than strict continuity: after the events of the ’90s Doom games, Doomguy continued his demon-slaying in Hell, joining a society of mythic heroes called the Night Sentinels. Eventually, things went south with the Sentinels, and the Slayer was locked up in a coffin, only to be unleashed in another timeline’s Mars for Doom 2016.

Confused? No worries. The key takeaway is that it’s all incredibly rad.

The game offers a wide array of weapons, including the return of the trusty Super Shotgun. Players can also get medieval with new weaponry, such as the face-shattering Flail and the revved-up, throwable Shield Saw.

Prepare to rip and tear through The Dark Ages in 2025.
