The MonsterVerse is advancing with a sequel to “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire,” but director Adam Wingard, who helmed both this film and its predecessor “Godzilla vs. Kong,” will not be returning.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Grant Sputore has been chosen to direct the upcoming sequel. Sputore is known for directing the 2019 Netflix sci-fi film “I Am Mother,” starring Hilary Swank. He also has experience in commercials and directed multiple episodes of the TV series “Castaway.” Sputore’s appointment comes after the recent hiring of Dave Callaham (“Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings”) to write the screenplay.

The MonsterVerse is advancing with a sequel to “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire,” but director Adam Wingard, who helmed both this film and its predecessor “Godzilla vs. Kong,” will not be returning due to scheduling conflicts, not bad blood. Wingard is set to start filming the action thriller “Onslaught” this fall.

Adam Wingard Exits the Franchise (For Now, At Least)

Wingard crafted the story of “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” with Terry Rossio and Simon Barrett, who co-wrote the script with Jeremy Slater. The film’s cast included Rebecca Hall, Brian Tyree Henry, Dan Stevens, Kaylee Hottle, Alex Ferns, and Fala Chen. It is not yet clear if any cast members from the franchise will return for the new film or if it will feature an entirely new human cast. However, it is expected that Godzilla and Kong will return, likely joined by other major Titans.

According to the official synopsis, “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” is an “all-new adventure that pits the almighty Kong and the fearsome Godzilla against a colossal undiscovered threat hidden within our world, challenging their very existence—and our own. The film delves further into the histories of these Titans and their origins, as well as the mysteries of Skull Island and beyond, while uncovering the mythic battle that helped forge these extraordinary beings and tied them to humankind forever.”

“Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” is currently available digitally and will be released on Blu-ray, DVD, and 4K UHD on June 11.
