The new trailer for Alien: Covenant has just been released, and it’s not for the faint of heart! Get a thrilling sneak peek at the intense action and terrifying moments awaiting you when the Xenomorphs return to theatres.

20th Century Studios has unveiled the first full-length trailer for Alien: Romulus, and if Prometheus and Alien: Covenant’s heavy sci-fi themes weren’t your thing, prepare for a gore-filled horror fest with Fede Álvarez’s latest effort.

The filmmaker wasn’t kidding about drawing inspiration from both Alien and Aliens, but this instalment feels more like a terrifying horror movie than an action-packed adventure.

The full Alien: Romulus trailer is exceptionally well-crafted, boding well for the upcoming film. The trailer builds ample suspense through a meticulously designed soundscape, eschewing dialogue. In one chilling moment, text on the screen reads “In Space…No One…Can Hear You” before cutting to a character screaming silently. An electronic buzz replaces the expected human howl. The control with which the trailer handles sound editing alone makes it one of the most exciting trailers of the year.

This level of craftsmanship speaks volumes about Fede Álvarez as a director. Known for Don’t Breathe, which focused on a blind man facing a home invasion, Álvarez excels at creating highly sensorial horror experiences. The Alien: Romulus trailer suggests this spacebound horror will be no exception, immersing audiences in the sonic terror of Xenomorphs and space stations.

Despite this promising start, Alien: Romulus has a high bar to clear. Alien and Aliens were directed by powerhouse filmmakers Ridley Scott and James Cameron, respectively, setting high standards for the franchise. However, a promising sign is that both Scott and Cameron have given positive responses to Alien: Romulus. Time will tell if this film lives up to its potential when it releases later this summer.

“This is the way this movie works: if you haven’t seen any Alien movie ever, you’ll have a great time,” Álvarez previously said of Romulus‘ place in the wider Alien franchise. “You won’t feel like you’re missing out on anything. But if you’ve seen one or more – oh, boy, you’ll have a blast. At least, I hope you will!”

“The reality is that it is a standalone story, but it’s filled with references to every movie. It is truly a love letter to all the other movies. I have my favorites, but I love them all. Every time I went to the theatre to watch an Alien movie, I had an experience that would stay with me all my life.”

The sci-fi/horror-thriller takes the phenomenally successful Alien franchise back to its roots: While scavenging the deep ends of a derelict space station, a group of young space colonizers come face to face with the most terrifying life form in the universe.

The film stars Cailee Spaeny (Priscilla), David Jonsson (Agatha Christie’s Murder is Easy), Archie Renaux (Shadow and Bone), Isabela Merced (The Last of Us), Spike Fearn (Aftersun), Aileen Wu. Fede Alvarez (Evil Dead) directs from a screenplay he wrote with frequent collaborator Rodo Sayagues (Don’t Breathe 2) based on characters created by Dan O’Bannon and Ronald Shusett.

Alien: Romulus is produced by Ridley Scott (Napoleon), who directed the original Alien and produced and directed the series’ entries Prometheus and Alien: Covenant, Michael Pruss (Boston Strangler), and Walter Hill (Alien), with Fede Alvarez, Elizabeth Cantillon (Charlie’s Angels), Brent O’Connor (Bullet Train), and Tom Moran (Unstoppable) serving as executive producers.

The movie is set to arrive in theatres on August 16.
