Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga hit theatres this weekend, but it’s struggling to outpace The Garfield Movie during a challenging Memorial Day weekend for exhibitors. Find out more!

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga hasn’t exactly raced away from The Garfield Movie at the North American box office this long Memorial Day weekend. According to Deadline, both films are in a dead heat, each grossing $31 million over four days and $25 million over three days.

By taking a look at the graphic below we can get a look at the most up to date box office totals for each film!

It seems that “The Garfield Movie” has started to outpace “Furiosa” with a world-wide haul of $97m against a $64m.

Critics haven’t been kind to The Garfield Movie, as evidenced by its 38% score on Rotten Tomatoes. In contrast, Furiosa is “Certified Fresh” with an impressive 90%.

Unfortunately, regardless of who wins, theaters seem to be losing. This is the lowest opening for a Memorial Day weekend in 29 years, since Casper debuted with a mere $22 million in 1995.

So, where did things go wrong? According to trade sources, Warner Bros. Discovery waited too long to start hyping Furiosa, with the final marketing push not beginning until late May. Others suggest that Anya Taylor-Joy isn’t the box office draw that Charlize Theron was for Mad Max: Fury Road in 2015. However, this criticism seems unfair considering Chris Hemsworth is also starring.

As for The Garfield Movie’s struggles, the negative reviews likely play a role. While parents with excited children might not care, other moviegoers probably take note of the poor reception.

Interestingly, both Furiosa and The Garfield Movie received the same CinemaScore from moviegoers…

As the world fell, young Furiosa is snatched from the Green Place of Many Mothers and falls into the hands of a great Biker Horde led by the Warlord Dementus. Sweeping through the Wasteland, they come across the Citadel presided over by The Immortan Joe. While the two Tyrants war for dominance, Furiosa must survive many trials as she puts together the means to find her way home.

Anya Taylor-Joy stars in the title role of Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, alongside Chris Hemsworth as Dementus. The film also features Alyla Browne and Tom Burke.

The script was co-written by George Miller and Mad Max: Fury Road co-writer Nico Lathouris. Miller has assembled an impressive creative team, including longtime collaborators like costume designer Jenny Beavan and makeup designer Lesley Vanderwalt, both of whom won Oscars for their work on Fury Road.

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga arrived in theatres in North America on May 24 and internationally beginning on May 22.
