After the release of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, rumours swirled around director Sam Raimi’s potential involvement in upcoming Marvel projects. Speculations linked him to three distinct films, although one might never come to fruition.

Reports suggested Raimi was among the “established filmmakers” Marvel’s Kevin Feige was eyeing for Avengers: Secret Wars. Additionally, recent rumors hinted at discussions for Raimi to direct two Spider-Man 4 projects: one serving as a follow-up to Sony Pictures’ No Way Home with Tom Holland and another as a direct sequel to Raimi’s original trilogy starring Tobey Maguire.

The burning question remains: Is Raimi officially attached to any of these projects?

“I don’t have any plans,” Raimi told The Wrap when asked about a possible return to the MCU on the red carpet of the Boy Kills World premiere. “But I would love it!”

When questioned about the possibility of returning to his Spider-Man trilogy for another instalment featuring Tobey Maguire, Raimi delved into his hypothetical thought process for the story.

Sam Raimi Spider-Man

“I’d have to know what the next thing that character has to learn. I’d have to talk with Tobey, and the writers, and really figure out what his personal growth for this episode would be. I think if we were to make a fourth Spider-Man film, we’d probably have to figure out the journey that Tobey Maguire his character would be going on, and what obstacles he had to overcome to achieve that growth personally,” he continued. “And I hope that the villain would be chosen based on a representation of that obstacle.”

It appears that while Raimi is intrigued by the possibility of returning to the Spider-Man universe, he’s not yet ready to confirm any involvement in the speculated projects.

Regarding the confirmed Spider-Man 4 with Tom Holland, rumors suggest some discord between Sony’s Tom Rothman and Marvel Studios’ Kevin Feige regarding the plot direction. Feige reportedly aims to downscale the Multiverse elements for a more contained story, while Rothman seeks to capitalize on the success of No Way Home by bringing back Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield as alternate versions of Peter Parker.

Tom Holland Spider-Man

Although Holland is set to reprise his role as the MCU’s Spider-Man, rumors suggest he may be growing weary of the iconic character, hinting that this could mark his final outing in the red and blue suit.

Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers, the scribes behind No Way Home, are currently penning the script, but details about the antagonists remain under wraps. While many of Spider-Man’s classic foes have already been featured in previous films, a recent rumour suggests that the upcoming sequel will introduce a new villain yet to be seen in live-action.
