Rumours are swirling around Sam Raimi, the director of the original Spider-Man trilogy, potentially taking the helm of the sequel to Spider-Man: No Way Home. While there’s no official word on the project’s timeline, speculation is rampant.

World of Reel reports that Raimi is a frontrunner for directing duties in the next Sony/Marvel Spider-Man instalment. Other contenders include John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein, known for their work on “Game Night” and “Dungeons & Dragons,” respectively, as well as Jon Favreau of “Iron Man” fame. Previously, Drew Goddard (“Cabin in the Woods”) and Justin Lin (known for his work on five “Fast and Furious” movies) were also in discussions but have since committed to other projects.

Fans were hoping that Raimi would return for a follow-up to his Tobey Maguire-led Spider-Man 3. However, the director poured cold water on those hopes at WonderCon. “Well, I haven’t heard about that yet,” he said when asked about teaming up with Maguire for a fourth installment:

“I did read that, but I’m not actually working on it yet. I mean, Marvel and Columbia are so successful with current Spider-Man [movies], and the track there, and I don’t know that they’re going to go back to me.”

Raimi Wants to Work with Marvel Again

In a separate interview, Raimi expressed his interest in working with Marvel again, with a strong interest in directing Secret Wars, the seventh instalment of the Avengers film series.

“I love 90% of the Marvel heroes that I’ve read in the great Stan Lee Marvel Universe comic books. I would love to work with Marvel again,
They haven’t reasonably asked me to. I hope they had a good experience with me. They haven’t asked me yet. I hope they do.”

Spider-Man No Way Home

Following the massive success of “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” which grossed a staggering $1.9 billion worldwide, talks of a sequel began swirling soon after its release. However, rumors surfaced suggesting a disagreement between Sony’s Tom Rothman and Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige regarding the sequel’s direction.

Feige purportedly advocated for dialing back the Multiverse elements in favor of a more grounded storyline, whereas Rothman reportedly pushed for the return of Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield as their respective Spider-Man iterations.

Despite rumors swirling that Tom Holland may be growing weary of portraying Spider-Man, his portrayal of Peter Parker/Spider-Man has received acclaim since his debut in 2016’s “Captain America: Civil War.” In the 2021 release “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” Peter Parker finds himself completely isolated after his heroic efforts to save his friends and the multiverse. Holland is expected to reprise his role in the fourth installment, alongside Zendaya as MJ.
