During promotion for the premiere of Infested, also known as Vermines, on Shudder, Sébastien Vaniček fielded questions about his upcoming Evil Dead spin-off, Evil Dead Rise. While he refrained from confirming or denying any connections to the broader horror franchise, he hinted at the early stages of the writing process with collaborator Florent Bernard. Vaniček remained tight-lipped, perhaps to avoid spoilers, leaving fans in suspense about the film’s ties to its predecessors.

“I would love to answer this question, but we are in the early process of the writing, so we have so many questions. We just wrote stuff with my co-writer. It’s the same co-writer I wrote Infested with, so I’m working with my team. I’m really glad. But we are in the process of building our story, our characters and everything, and we are chatting with each other.”

Vaniček continued:

“There’s so many ideas coming from everywhere. For the moment, we are in the sandbox, and we haven’t started to build a castle. We are just gathering the best sand, and as soon as I have the best sand, I will start to build a castle.”

Sébastien Vaniček’s Evil Dead Spin-Off Eyes Halloween 2025

In early February, it was announced that Sébastien Vaniček would be directing the upcoming Evil Dead spin-off, in addition to co-writing the screenplay. Having previously directed shorts such as Mayday and Crocs, Vaniček made his feature-length debut with the film Infested.

While Vaniček remained tight-lipped about potential connections to other entries in the Evil Dead franchise or the Ash vs Evil Dead series, he expressed optimism about the spin-off’s release timeframe, aiming for a Halloween 2025 premiere. In an interview with Konbini, Vaniček shared his aspirations for the horror flick.

“If all goes well, we could start filming at the end of 2024 — beginning of 2025, for a release that I hope for Halloween 2025”

Given that Ash Williams (portrayed by Bruce Campbell) hasn’t been central to the last two franchise instalments—the 2013 remake and Evil Dead Rise—it appears improbable that he’ll feature prominently in the upcoming entry. However, Sébastien Vaniček assures fans that the Evil Dead spin-off will deliver a visceral experience. In the same interview, Vaniček emphasized the film’s gritty nature.

“I told the studio that I wanted to make a nasty film, a film that hurts, from which you come away tested. I’m going to put all the horror I have inside, it will be cathartic, and if I haven’t ruined my career and I can continue to make films behind it, I will move on to something other than horror!”

Look for the Evil Dead spin-off in theatres, hopefully, around Halloween 2025. Meanwhile, Infested, aka Vermines, drops Friday, April 26 on Shudder.
