Fans have been treated to a sneak peek at David Corenswet’s portrayal of Clark Kent in James Gunn’s upcoming Superman (2025), thanks to new behind-the-scenes images. While details about the project remain closely guarded by Gunn, including the reveal of the new suit, these latest photos offer the clearest view yet of Corenswet’s take on the iconic character.

Recently surfaced images from the Con Yucatán Facebook page showcase Corenswet’s physique for the role of Superman. Filming an ad in Mexico, Corenswet’s muscular frame is on display in a tank top, drawing comparisons to Henry Cavill’s portrayal of the Man of Steel in previous films, spanning from 2013’s Man of Steel to 2022’s Black Adam.

Corenswet faced scepticism from some fans initially due to concerns about his physique for the role of Clark Kent. In the wake of Henry Cavill’s muscular portrayal, which set a high bar for superhero physiques, many questioned whether Corenswet had the necessary bulk. However, the latest set photos suggest he’s been hard at work in the gym, shaping up to embody a convincing Superman in James Gunn’s upcoming reboot.

The DC Universe Is Taking a Much-Needed Break

In 2024, the DC Cinematic Universe will take a hiatus from new releases, with James Gunn’s Superman slated for a 2025 debut, marking the start of Gunn’s fresh DC Universe. This break follows the conclusion of the DC Extended Universe (DCEU) with Jason Momoa’s Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. While Todd Phillips’ Joker: Folie à Deux is set to hit theaters this October, its story unfolds in a standalone universe separate from the main DC continuity.

The pause in the DCU’s film slate aims to rejuvenate the franchise and distance it from the superhero fatigue that has recently affected the genre. James Gunn, known for his candid opinions, has openly addressed this issue, expressing that the problem lies not with superheroes themselves but with the types of stories being told. In an interview with Rolling Stone, Gunn remarked, “I think it doesn’t have anything to do with superheroes. It has to do with the kind of stories that get to be told.”

Meanwhile, in contrast to the perceived decline in quality within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 injected new vitality into the franchise. This came in a year where The Marvels experienced the slowest growth in the entire 16-year saga, underscoring the need for fresh approaches to storytelling within the superhero genre.

However, after Superman debuts in 2025, James Gunn has a packed slate of projects which comprise the new DCU’s first phase, titled Gods & Monsters. This slate includes Supergirl: Woman of TomorrowThe Brave and the Bold, a Swamp Thing movie, and the recently announced Teen Titans film. James Gunn’s Superman also continues his trend of giving underappreciated comic book characters the spotlight. Alongside Corenswet’s Superman, Rachel Brosnahan’s Lois Lane, and Nicholas Hoult’s Lex Luthor, Isabela Merced will be portraying the anti-hero The Engineer. The Engineer’s appearance will also tie Superman into the upcoming The Authority movie, which also takes place in the new DCU’s first phase.
