Out of this week’s CinemaCon in Las Vegas emerges a major bombshell: a new Scary Movie is officially in the works, confirmed today via FearHQ.com. Production is slated to kick off this fall under the joint auspices of Paramount and Miramax.

Leading the charge as producer is Neal H. Moritz, renowned for his work on the Fast & Furious franchise. Despite the heyday of parody titles like Scary Movie seeming to have passed, Paramount is boldly venturing back into the realm of horror satire.

Scheduled for release next year, potentially in time for Halloween, the reboot aims to carve its own path in theaters. Paramount is undoubtedly eager to cultivate a fresh franchise, following the original series’ launch in 2000, which waned after its fifth installment in 2013.

This iteration of Scary Movie is part of Paramount’s inaugural collaboration with Miramax, with both studios fully financing the production, while Paramount handles distribution.

Moritz, also known for his involvement in the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise, is concurrently working on a reboot of Face/Off for the studio.

The Scary Movie franchise, known for its irreverent humor and pop culture satire, has garnered a dedicated fanbase despite mixed critical reception. Since its inception in 2000 with Keenen Ivory Wayans’ Scary Movie, the series has parodied popular horror, slasher, and mystery films, along with elements of celebrity culture and reality TV.

Scary Movie 2 delved into haunted house and possession movie tropes, with characters encountering supernatural phenomena in a creepy mansion. While subsequent installments lacked a clear direction, they continued to target celebrity culture and reality TV, typically featuring Anna Faris, Regina Hall, Shawn Wayans, and Marlon Wayans.

Despite varying critical responses, the franchise has seen box office success. The first film grossed $278 million on a $19 million budget, with sequels earning $141 million, $220 million, $178 million, and $78 million respectively. However, the decline in earnings for the fifth installment led to a hiatus lasting nearly a decade.

Now, with numerous new horror franchises ripe for parody, the stage is set for a fresh iteration of Scary Movie to return to the spotlight.
