After a period of uncertainty marked by stalled updates, it’s now official: HBO’s much-anticipated sequel series to Game of Thrones, focused on the ongoing exploits of Jon Snow—revealed as Aegon Targaryen—has been shelved.
Actor Kit Harington, poised to return as the honourable ‘bastard’ of Winterfell who emerged as the rightful heir to the Iron Throne, delivered the news during an interview with Screen Rant. His revelation confirms the fate of the eagerly awaited show, which will not be progressing beyond the planning stage.
“Currently, it’s off the table because we all couldn’t find the right story to tell that we were all excited about enough,” Harington explained. “So, we decided to lay down tools with it for the time being. There may be a time in the future where we return to it, but at the moment, no. It’s firmly on the shelf.”
Harington had previously been somewhat tight-lipped about the potential spin-off during interviews, and he notes that this was because “I didn’t want the thing to happen where people kind of start theorizing, getting either excited about it or hating the idea of it, when it may never happen.”

While details about the creative team behind HBO’s planned Game of Thrones sequel series remained shrouded in mystery, A Song of Ice and Fire saga author George R.R. Martin recently shed light on the project’s development. On his personal blog last year, Martin disclosed that the sequel series did indeed have writers and a showrunner attached.
“Yes, it was Kit Harington who brought the idea to us. I cannot tell you the names of the writers/ showrunners, since that has not been cleared for release yet… but Kit brought them in too, his own team, and they are terrific.”
The final season of Game of Thrones, though defended by some, left many fans disappointed with its handling of the beloved fantasy saga. In particular, the last two episodes faced significant backlash due to controversial creative choices, notably the transformation of fan-favorite Daenerys Targaryen into a ruthless conqueror who razed King’s Landing, sacrificing countless innocent lives for vengeance against Cersei Lannister.
The series finale delivered another shocking twist as Jon Snow, realizing Daenerys’ descent into madness, was compelled to kill his lover and aunt. Despite confessing his crime, Jon avoided execution but was exiled back to The Wall. The closing scene showed him leading the Night’s Watch into the Wildling territory beyond the Wall.
While it’s disappointing that the planned sequel series, tentatively titled Snow, won’t be progressing, there remains hope that Kit Harington and HBO may collaborate on a future project that does justice to the rich tapestry of Westeros.
