The shark attack horror genre has seen numerous entries since Steven Spielberg’s groundbreaking film, Jaws, hit theatres in the 1970s. However, many of these films fail to live up to the quality of their predecessor. For every standout like Deep Blue Sea or The Shallows, countless imitators flood the market, often diluting the subgenre’s impact.

Yet, amidst the sea of mediocrity, occasionally a gem emerges. Netflix may have found one such gem with Under Paris, a shark attack horror movie helmed by French director Xavier Gens.

Xavier Gens, known for films like Frontiers and Cold Skin, returns with Under Paris following his recent action movie, Mayhem! Set to premiere on Netflix on June 5, the film’s official trailer was released this week.

In Under Paris, Gens follows the tradition of Jaws as a celebratory event transforms into a nightmare when a hungry shark arrives in the heart of Paris. With one shark and a plethora of potential prey, the stage is set for a thrilling and terrifying ride.

The synopsis for Under Paris reads, “Sophia, a brilliant scientist, discovers that a large shark is swimming deep in the river,” promising audiences a gripping and suspenseful tale.

With its unique premise and Xavier Gens at the helm, Under Paris may just reignite excitement for the shark attack horror genre.

Here’s a bit of a longer plot synopsis for this one…

“Set in Summer 2024, the film unfolds in Paris which is hosting the World Triathlon Championships on the Seine for the first time. Sophia, a brilliant scientist, learns from Mika, a young environmental activist, that a large shark is swimming deep in the river.”

To avoid a bloodbath at the heart of the city, they have no choice but to join forces with Adil, the Seine river police commander.”

Bérénice Bejo (The Artist) and Nassim Lyes (Overdose) star.
