New plot details for the meta-slasher sequel, Scream 7, have surfaced, suggesting a family-centric storyline. According to trusted insider Daniel Richtman (via X), the main targets of Ghostface will be Sidney Prescott’s family. Richtman reveals, “They are looking to cast Sid’s two kids. It seems like the movie will focus on Sid’s family as all 4 (her, her husband and 2 kids) are listed as leads.”

These revelations indicate that Scream 7 will pivot away from characters introduced in the legacy sequels Scream (2022) and Scream VI (2023), particularly the Core Four, and instead return to its roots with Sidney Prescott taking centre stage once again. Neve Campbell is set to reprise her iconic role after the character’s absence in Scream VI.

Neve Campbell

While Neve Campbell is currently the sole actor officially confirmed for Scream 7, reports suggest that franchise veterans Courteney Cox and Patrick Dempsey are in negotiations to return. Cox, the only actor besides Ghostface voice actor Roger L. Jackson to feature in all six Scream films, would reprise her role as journalist Gale Weathers. Meanwhile, Dempsey would revisit his character Detective Mark Kincaid, last seen in Scream 3 (2000). In the preceding two Scream movies, it was unveiled that Sidney had rekindled her relationship with Mark off-screen, and the two were depicted as married with children.

Scream 7 Was Originally Going to Look a Lot Different

Carpenter Sisters Scream 6

While Scream fans are excited about Campbell’s return to the franchise, the seventh movie wasn’t originally going to focus on Sidney. Instead, Scream 7 was going to wrap up the Carpenter Sisters storyline that began in 2022’s Scream. However, after voicing her thoughts on the Israel-Hamas war on social media, Melissa Barrera was fired from Scream 7, prematurely ending Sam Carpenter’s story within the franchise. Shortly thereafter, it was revealed that Jenna Ortega would also not be returning as Sam’s younger sister, Tara Carpenter, due to a scheduling conflict with Wednesday Season 2.

Following the departure of the two new leads from the Scream franchise, Spyglass Entertainment went back to the drawing board to rework the upcoming sequel. In March 2024, the return of Neve Campbell was announced, alongside news that original Scream writer and franchise co-creator Kevin Williamson would direct the untitled sequel, with a screenplay penned by James Vanderbilt and Guy Busick. As of now, the commencement of production on this highly-anticipated sequel remains unknown.

Scream 7 is currently without a confirmed release date.
