In 2023, it was confirmed that Daisy Ridley will be returning to the Star Wars universe. Despite the early stages of development for the upcoming Star Wars: New Jedi Order, the actor is enthusiastic about reprising her iconic role as Rey.
“I suppose I feel more like I’m owning it,” Ridley told Empire. “I suppose I owned it the first time. Basically, I’m an adult now. I certainly did not feel like an adult at the time. Obviously, personally, things have changed, and professionally, I’ve had lots of other experiences, and so I definitely feel like it’s a different thing this time. There’s just a lot of joy with me and these films. Honestly, if I wasn’t excited, I wouldn’t have done it. It feels like a great thing to be a part of.”
“It wasn’t a difficult decision,” Ridley continued, noting that she didn’t immediately agree to return.
“I didn’t say yes right away. Kathy [Kennedy] was like, ‘Take as long as you need.’ Why wouldn’t I [do it]? Yes, they have been divisive, but also they bring a lot of love and joy to a lot of people. It feels pretty amazing to be able to continue a character. Like, can I even remember how to play her? It’s an interesting challenge as an actor to come back to something and try to figure out what’s changed for me and what’s changed for her.”
Rey Is Ready to Rebuild the Jedi Order
Previously, Ridley spoke about her return to the iconic faraway galaxy, unveiling that Rey would assume the role of a Jedi Master tasked with rebuilding the Jedi Order. When questioned about whether her character would adopt a distinct approach from that of Luke Skywalker, she remarked:
“I would say, from what I understand, yes.” Ridley also expressed her excitement for the project. “I am [excited]. It’s very strange. I’ve gone off and done all sorts of films, and I feel like I’ve learned a lot and grown a lot as an actor. I think [the new movie] will be like baby steps again. It’ll be like starting at the beginning again.”
Ridley expressed her enthusiasm for the potential return of John Boyega as Finn, but acknowledged that such decisions were “above my pay grade.” Speculation has arisen regarding Boyega’s involvement in the New Jedi Order, with the actor himself expressing openness to reprising his role.
“I’m open to all characters and scripts that are enjoyable, have a great cast attached, and a terrific director,”
