DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn, at the helm of the upcoming Superman reboot as both writer and director, has taken to social media to dispel lingering speculation. Addressing fans on his Threads account, Gunn definitively outlined the protagonist and antagonist of the highly anticipated film.

Teaming up with Peter Safran to revitalize the DC Universe under the banner of DCU’s Chapter One: Gods and Monsters, Gunn’s vision encompasses a sweeping narrative arc across various media, including television series and cinematic blockbusters. Superman stands as the inaugural instalment of this ambitious phase, scheduled to hit theatres next summer.

James Gunn Superman

With multiple rumours trying to predict what Gunn’s Superman would be like, the director felt he had to shut down the rumours about a new villain. “The primary protagonist of Superman is, shockingly, Superman. The main villain of Superman is, shockingly, Lex Luthor,” the director wrote. In his upcoming film, David Corenswet will put on Man of Steel’s suit, with Nicholas Hoult playing the villain Lex Luthor.

I don’t know where all the stuff is coming from that it’s something other than this,” Gunn continued. “There are so many stories coming out every day it’s difficult to deal with and every time I strike something down I’m giving it attention. So, I’ll say again, don’t believe anything unless you see it HERE (& why would you want to know everything before the movie comes out anyway?)”

James Gunn’s Superman: Everything We Know So Far

Production on the superhero film initially titled Superman: Legacy commenced in late February, with the inaugural scenes shot on location in Svalbard, Norway. Director James Gunn not only announced the commencement of production but also unveiled the revised title. Emphasizing a departure from the typical origin story formula, Gunn clarified that the upcoming Superman installment would delve into Kal-El’s struggle to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his upbringing as Clark Kent in Smallville, Kansas, all while navigating his role at the Daily Planet.

The star-studded cast includes David Corenswet as Superman and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, with Rachel Brosnahan stepping into the iconic role of Lois Lane. Additionally, confirmed cast members include Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher, and Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner/Green Lantern, among others.

Scheduled for release on July 11, 2025, Superman promises a fresh take on the legendary superhero’s journey.
