Back in 2019, Marvel Studios made waves at the San Diego Comic-Con with the announcement of a Blade reboot. Mahershala Ali’s appearance alongside Kevin Feige confirmed him as the MCU’s Daywalker, causing a sensation online.

However, the pandemic and subsequent developments, including a voice cameo in Eternals, temporarily sidelined Blade’s progress. The reboot encountered numerous hurdles, including changes in writers, directors, and cast members. Nevertheless, a clear vision for the project has begun to emerge, focusing on a grounded, gritty portrayal of the character rather than a typical effects-heavy Marvel blockbuster. Director Yann Demange has also confirmed Blade will be R-Rated.

Now, a promising update has surfaced from Production Weekly. The latest issue indicates that Blade is set to commence filming this fall. While this aligns with the planned November 7, 2025 release date, there’s speculation it might face further delays into 2026.

While caution is warranted regarding synopses from Production Weekly, their track record for accurate production updates lends credence to this positive development.

We’ve lost track of the writers who have been attached to Blade over the past few years, though Michael Green (Logan) is thought to have finally cracked the story after his five predecessors failed to do so.

“They gave me the R, which is so important,” Demange said last November. “I come out of [his new short film, Dammi] wanting to be more open, more vulnerable and bring a more personal aspect to my work. But for Blade, we are going to have fun because Mahershala is such a deep actor.”

“I’m excited to show a kind of ruthlessness, a roughness he has, that allows him to walk the earth in a particular way. I love him for that,” the filmmaker added. “He’s got a dignity and integrity, but there is a ferocity there that he usually keeps under the surface. I want to unleash that and put it on the screen.”

While Blade’s theatrical release is slated for 2025, fans can anticipate Mahershala Ali’s portrayal of the character sooner in Marvel Animation’s What If…? spin-off, Marvel Zombies.

Keep an eye out for further updates as they become available.
