Reflecting on the Role: Gyllenhaal Discusses Future Portrayal of Bruce Wayne and its Significance.
In an upcoming DCU debut, a fresh iteration of the Dark Knight will grace screens in The Brave and the Bold, and Jake Gyllenhaal is eager to step into the role.
In a conversation with Screen Rant, Gyllenhaal expressed his enthusiasm for the possibility of portraying the titular hero. Reflecting on the weight of embodying a character that others have brought to life on screen, he remarked, “Oh, man. That’s a classic. It’s an honor.” He continued, drawing parallels to his upcoming role as Iago in Othello alongside Denzel Washington, stating, “When I think about the history of actors that have played that role throughout time, I’m intimidated by that.”

“So that’s the first level,” the actor continued. “That’s what I’m working on right now. But of course, it would be an honor always [to play Batman]. Those types of things and those roles are classics.”
Gyllenhaal’s potential portrayal of Bruce Wayne holds significant weight, especially considering his past connection to the role. He was previously considered for the part in Christopher Nolan’s Batman Begins, although the role ultimately went to Christian Bale, despite writer David S. Goyer’s support for Gyllenhaal.
The upcoming film The Brave and the Bold, directed by Andy Muschietti and scripted by Bill Finger, Bob Kane, and Grant Morrison, marks a new chapter for the Dark Knight in the DCU. Described by DC Studios boss James Gunn as “the introduction of the DCU Batman,” the movie will diverge from the traditional origin story, drawing inspiration from Morrison and Andy Kubert’s 2006 Batman and Son arc.
In this storyline, Bruce Wayne discovers he has a son, Damian, with Talia al Ghul, daughter of his nemesis Ra’s al Ghul. “It also introduces our favorite Robin, Damian Wayne, who is a little son of a bitch,” Gunn explained. He hinted at an older Batman compared to Superman, with Clark Kent portrayed as “younger than in his forties.”
While the narrative for The Brave and the Bold is set, details regarding casting are still forthcoming.

Several actors have played Batman throughout history. The most recent portrayals include Robert Pattinson in The Batman, Ben Affleck in the DC Extended Universe, and Christian Bale in The Dark Knight trilogy. Actors whose names have been tossed around to suit up as the next Caped Crusader are Alan Ritchson and Ryan Gosling.
The Brave and the Bold does not have a release date.
