Adam Wingard, Director of Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, Shares Promising Update on Upcoming ThunderCats Movie.

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire director Adam Wingard recently hinted that his next movie could be the long-gestating live-action ThunderCats adaptation.

In an interview with io9, Wingard shared an encouraging update on his ThunderCats movie, which was announced by Warner Bros. in March 2021. “Simon [Barrett] and I are still actively working on the script,” he said. “We finished our last draft basically right when I was going into production on this movie [Godzilla x Kong] and we just had to put everything on hold. [But] right now we’re actively working on it again. So whether that means that’s the next thing I do or [not], I’m not sure. But it’s definitely one of the top priorities I have right now in terms of working on a script.”

ThunderCats, created by Ted Wolf, chronicles the journey of cat-humanoids escaping their dying homeworld Thundera to seek refuge on Third Earth. The group, comprising Lion-O, Tygra, Cheetara, Panthro, WilyKit, WilyKat, and Snarf, must safeguard the legendary Sword of Omens and its Eye of Thundera stone from the menacing Mutants of Plun-Darr and the malevolent demon-priest Mumm-Ra. Originally airing 130 episodes across four seasons from 1985 to 1989, the cartoon has left an indelible mark.

Despite its popularity, ThunderCats faced challenges in transitioning to the big screen. Warner Bros. endeavored to bring the franchise to life in the late 2000s as a CG-animated feature film. Jerry O’Flaherty was set to direct, with a screenplay penned by Paul Sopocy. Initially scheduled for release in 2010, the project languished in development and was ultimately shelved.

Two reboot series followed: ThunderCats (2011-12) and ThunderCats Roar (2020), both met with cancellation after just one season.

ThunderCats: A Lifelong Dream Realized for Director Adam Wingard

After Wingard was announced to be co-writing and directing ThunderCats, he revealed to Deadline how he has been wanting to make a ThunderCats movie since he was in high school. ThunderCats is a dream project for me. When I was in high school, I was obsessed with it. You’d think at that point, I was a little too old, that my years of obsession with ThunderCats would be when I was 6 years old,” Wingard shared. “My real obsession with ThunderCats came in high school … I was writing my ThunderCats screenplay through my entire 10th grade year. And I was hand-writing it. The screenplay itself ended up being 272 pages long. I still have it.”

As director Adam Wingard steps into the realm of ThunderCats, it’s evident that this project holds immense personal significance for him. With his passion and vision driving the film forward, fans can anticipate an exciting journey into the world of Thundera.
