After Years of Uncertainty, Steven Spielberg Confirms Involvement in Ready Player One Sequel.

Steven Spielberg, director of the 2018 film, confirms his role as a producer in Ready Player Two, based on Ernest Cline’s novel. The adaptation, penned by Cline and Zak Penn, portrays a dystopian future where people seek refuge in the virtual reality world of OASIS. Known for its abundance of pop-culture references, the film features a star-studded cast including Tye Sheridan, Olivia Cooke, Ben Mendelsohn, Lena Waithe, T.J. Miller, Simon Pegg, and Mark Rylance.

In an update provided to Showbiz 411 during the 2024 Oscars’ Universal Pictures gala at Soho House, Spielberg discussed his upcoming projects. While no productions are planned for 2024, he mentioned being in the ‘discovery phase’ to determine the next steps. However, he confirmed his involvement as a producer in the Ready Player Two sequel.

What’s The Status Of Ready Player Two?

Despite the immense success of “Ready Player One,” grossing over $607 million worldwide in 2018, discussions about a sequel began to gain traction in 2020 following the release of Ernest Cline’s sequel novel, “Ready Player Two.” Shortly after the publication, Cline announced that a film adaptation was in its early development stages. Despite these announcements and Spielberg’s confirmation of his role as a producer, Warner Bros. has not officially greenlit the “Ready Player Two” movie.

Spielberg’s involvement in “Ready Player Two,” even in a producer capacity, is somewhat surprising given his historical aversion to sequels, with notable exceptions such as the “Indiana Jones” and “Jurassic Park” franchises. However, Spielberg often lends his name as a producer to various projects without significant involvement in their development, as seen with recent productions like “Maestro,” “The Color Purple,” “Halo,” and “Masters of the Air.” As “Ready Player Two” progresses through development, the extent of Spielberg’s role as a producer is expected to become clearer.
