James Gunn, Director of SUPERMAN and DC Studios Head, Shares Plans for Standalone Movie Concept Before DCEU Reboot, Drawing Parallels with Matt Reeves’ The Batman.

Before David Zaslav, CEO of Warner Bros. Discovery, made the call to reboot the DC Extended Universe under DC Studios’ DCU banner, James Gunn was initially in talks to pen and helm a fresh Superman installment.

The triumph of The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker paved the way for Gunn, along with seasoned producer Peter Safran, to steer the DCU ship. Their leadership now extends to Superman: Legacy SUPERMAN and a plethora of projects christened “Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters.”

Time will be the ultimate judge of whether Gunn, renowned for Guardians of the Galaxy, can revolutionize this franchise, with SUPERMAN serving as a litmus test for fan reception.

Despite the ups and downs of the DCEU, The Batman stood tall as a standalone success, charting a new path for the Dark Knight distinct from the larger cinematic universe.

Gunn recently disclosed that during initial talks in the summer of 2022, the concept for his Superman venture was envisioned as an Elseworlds tale, detached from the DCEU continuum.

While it’s likely the narrative has undergone significant changes since then, the original plan might have seen Henry Cavill’s Superman coexist with Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam in a parallel universe—a notion that, while intriguing, underscores the lack of long-term planning at Warner Bros.

Certainly, it seems Gunn had a different vision for his Superman project from the outset. I’d be happy to help with any further analysis or discussion regarding his comments. If you have the screenshots, feel free to share them, and we can delve into the details.

“Superman” embarks on the iconic journey of the Man of Steel as he grapples with his dual identity—balancing his Kryptonian heritage with his upbringing in Smallville, Kansas, as the humble Clark Kent. In a world that often dismisses kindness as outdated, Superman stands as the epitome of truth, justice, and the American way, guided by the compassion of humanity.

Leading the charge is David Corenswet, taking on the mantle of the legendary hero, while Rachel Brosnahan steps into the shoes of the intrepid journalist, Lois Lane. Joining the stellar cast are recent additions including Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho, Gabriela de Faría as The Engineer, Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher, Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, and Wendell Pierce as Perry White.

Mark your calendars as “Superman” soars into theatres on July 11, 2025, promising an epic adventure that celebrates the enduring legacy of the Man of Steel.
