Chris Hemsworth, Star of Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, Explains Why Warlord Dementus Is Anything But Your Typical Villain

In a recent interview with Empire, Marvel veteran Chris Hemsworth teased the intriguing dynamic between his character, Warlord Dementus, and Anya Taylor-Joy’s titular character in George Miller’s upcoming Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga.

Hemsworth shared fresh insights into his villainous role, emphasizing that Dementus transcends the typical “sadistic” archetype. He revealed that Dementus is a calculated individual with genuine motives behind his actions, stating, “Through the whole film, we kept coming back to, ‘This is evil, but what is the intention behind it?’ It’s not just sadistic insanity.” He elaborated, describing Dementus as someone who meticulously plans and strategizes, always staying steps ahead of others. “There is a real purpose, the wheels are turning, he’s plotting and planning and ten steps ahead of everyone else,” Hemsworth added.

Hemsworth delved further into the intriguing relationship between Dementus and Furiosa, unveiling the unexpected paternal lens through which the villain perceives himself. “I think that’s how he sees himself,” he mused, highlighting a peculiar paternal nature in their dynamic. However, he acknowledged the stark contrast in perception, noting, “[Furiosa] would, I’m sure, argue to her death the complete opposite.”

Expanding on the adrenaline-pumping action fans can expect, the Thor: Ragnarok star offered a glimpse into the heart-pounding stunt sequences awaiting in the Mad Max: Fury Road prequel. “The chariot bike is the wildest piece of machinery I’ve ever driven, and I loved every second of it,” Hemsworth enthused. He recounted a particularly intense moment, hanging off a crane before being loaded onto a monster truck, only to be unclipped mid-air and spun away into a burnout. Reflecting on the juxtaposition of such intense action with the creator’s gentle nature, he remarked, “How this world comes from one of the kindest individuals, I’ll never know…”

What to expect from “Furiosa”

Directed and co-written by Miller, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga features a stellar cast including Tom Burke, Alyla Browne, Nathan Jones, Angus Sampson, Daniel Webber, and more. Specific details about their characters remain tightly under wraps.

To portray the young version of Charlize Theron’s iconic character from the 2015 movie, Taylor-Joy initially intended to shave her head. However, Miller intervened, preventing the Queen’s Gambit star from taking the drastic step. Taylor-Joy explained, “I felt so fiercely protective over Furiosa, and fiercely protective of her interests. I was so excited to shave my head. Then George saw me in real life, and went, ‘No, we can’t!’”

The official synopsis for Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga reads, “As the world fell, young Furiosa is snatched from the Green Place of Many Mothers and falls into the hands of a great Biker Horde led by the Warlord Dementus. Sweeping through the Wasteland, they come across the Citadel presided over by The Immortan Joe. While the two Tyrants war for dominance, Furiosa must survive many trials as she puts together the means to find her way home.”

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga is set to debut on May 24, 2024.
