Robert Downey Jr., following two previous Oscar nominations, has now ascended to the ranks of Academy Award winners, marking a pivotal moment in his esteemed career.
During Sunday evening’s Academy Awards ceremony, the winner for Best Supporting Actor was revealed, and the honour went to Robert Downey Jr. for his portrayal of Lewis Strauss in Christopher Nolan’s acclaimed film “Oppenheimer.” This victory adds to the long list of prestigious awards earned by Downey Jr. for his outstanding performance in the movie. Notably, this marks Downey Jr.’s first Oscar win, despite previous nominations for his roles in “Chaplin” and “Tropic Thunder.”
Despite being the frontrunner, Robert Downey Jr.’s victory in the Best Supporting Actor category at the Oscars was not a certainty, given the strong competition. The category boasted formidable nominees, including Mark Ruffalo for his role in “Poor Things,” Ryan Gosling in “Barbie,” Robert De Niro in “Killers of the Flower Moon,” and Sterling K. Brown in “American Fiction.”
Sterling K. Brown, one of the nominees in the category, had accurately predicted Downey Jr.’s win ahead of the event. Brown expressed his belief that Downey Jr. was the clear favorite to clinch the award and had already mentally prepared for the outcome. Despite this, Brown emphasized that Downey Jr. was indeed deserving of the recognition, showcasing sportsmanship and respect for his fellow nominee.
“I know that I’m not going to win,” Brown said on The Graham Norton Show. “Yeah, and I’m fine with that. Totally fine with it. I’ll tell you, Robert Downey Jr. is going to win. And he’s incredibly deserving. He’s an incredible actor. You should give him love. The fact that I get a chance to be nominated along with him, and [Robert] De Niro, and Ryan Gosling, and [Mark] Ruffalo. I’m just happy to be in the room.”

Robert Downey Jr. Is Happy It’s Taken Him Time to Win
Robert Downey Jr. reflected on his journey in the film industry, acknowledging that he was content with not winning the first time he was nominated for an Oscar in 1993. In fact, he expressed gratitude for not winning at that time, believing that it allowed him the opportunity to grow as an actor in ways that winning the Academy Award wouldn’t have permitted. Downey Jr. shared his perspective on The View in January, admitting, “I was young and crazy. It would have put me under the impression that I was on the right track.”
This sentiment underscores Downey Jr.’s evolution as an actor over the course of more than three decades in the industry. His patience and dedication eventually led him to his long-awaited moment of triumph at the Oscars for his role in “Oppenheimer.”
