Juan Carlos Fresnadillo’s ‘Damsel’ featuring Millie Bobby Brown from Stranger Things hits Netflix, but initial reviews paint a challenging picture.
Damsel, Juan Carlos Fresnadillo’s fantasy action-adventure featuring Millie Bobby Brown, has landed on Netflix with mixed reviews following its premiere. The review embargo lifted late last night, revealing a lukewarm reception from critics. Despite expectations, the film’s departure from Fresnadillo’s previous works, such as “28 Weeks Later,” into the fantasy genre has not entirely won over reviewers.

The PG-13 rated film, which surprisingly has a fresh rating but only just, currently holds a 60% rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 70 reviews. Criticism towards the film appears to be scattered, with opinions ranging from praise for Brown’s performance to scepticism about her suitability for the lead role. Meanwhile, the dragon character, voiced by Shohreh Aghdashloo, receives contrasting evaluations, with some applauding its terrifying presence while others criticize its CGI execution.
Despite the divisive feedback, there are redeeming qualities to “Damsel.” Notably, the dragon stands out as a highlight, though opinions on the film overall remain varied.
In “Damsel,” Millie Bobby Brown takes on the role of Princess Elodie, whose fairy tale engagement to Prince Henry quickly turns into a nightmare. Betrayed by the royal family, Elodie discovers she’s been offered as a sacrifice to a dragon to settle an ancient debt.
Left to fend for herself in the dragon’s lair, Elodie refuses to wait for a hero and instead resolves to confront the creature herself. Armed with determination, a resilient spirit, and a formidable sword, she embarks on a daring quest to slay the fire-breathing beast.
Directed by Juan Carlos Fresnadillo, known for his work on “28 Weeks Later,” and written by Dan Mazeau (“Fast X”), “Damsel” is a fantasy adventure with a twist. Brown not only stars as Elodie but also serves as an executive producer alongside Mazeau, Robert Brown (“Hell’s Kitchen”), Mark Bomback (“Dawn of the Planet of the Apes”), and Sue Baden-Powell (“Alpha”).
Joining Brown in the cast are Nick Robinson from “Jurassic World,” Angela Bassett from “Black Panther,” and Ray Winstone from “Black Widow.” Together, they bring to life a tale of courage, betrayal, and the strength found within oneself.
As “Damsel” makes its debut on Netflix, viewers have the opportunity to experience Princess Elodie’s journey firsthand. Will you be joining her quest to confront the dragon and reclaim her destiny?
