For years, fans of DC Comics have rallied behind the idea of Karen Gillan taking on the role of the iconic supervillain Poison Ivy. Gillan herself has expressed openness to the idea, sparking ongoing speculation about her potential involvement in the DC Universe. Despite not yet being officially cast in any DCU projects, Gillan’s collaboration with James Gunn in “Guardians of the Galaxy” adds fuel to the anticipation of her joining the superhero franchise.

In a recent interview with Screen Rant, Gillan reiterated her enthusiasm for portraying Poison Ivy, particularly in a storyline exploring the character’s romantic entanglement with Harley Quinn. As discussions continue regarding future DCU films, fans eagerly await news of Gillan’s potential casting in this coveted role.

As Gillan said when asked about which version of Poison Ivy she wanted to play, “Oooh. That’s a good question. In a relationship with Harley Quinn sounds excellent.”

Karen Gillan Open to Any Role in the DCU, But Poison Ivy Remains the Ideal Choice

I always thought that Poison Ivy was really fun,” Gillan previously told Total Film about the possibility in 2023, noting she’d still be up for playing another role in the DCU. “Honestly, if James [Gunn] asked me to play an alien that sits in the background of a shot and doesn’t talk, I would say yes [laughs]. Because working with him has been one of the great joys of my career so far.”

The DC Extended Universe is abuzz with speculation as plans for a Batman movie titled “The Brave and the Bold” take shape. This instalment could serve as the platform for introducing the next iteration of Poison Ivy to audiences. However, director James Gunn has remained tight-lipped about his intentions for the character. The same uncertainty surrounds the fate of Harley Quinn, Poison Ivy’s romantic partner, with no confirmation yet on whether Margot Robbie will reprise her role or if a new actor will step into the DCU version.

In the meantime, Gunn is gearing up for the highly anticipated launch of the DCU later in 2024, starting with the animated series “Creature Commandos” set to stream on Max. This series marks the inaugural title within the DCU continuity. Additionally, Gunn is currently in production for the first movie of the DCU lineup, “Superman,” which is scheduled to hit theaters on July 11, 2025.
