Director James Gunn Shares Details on Superman’s Filming Kickoff in Svalbard, Norway Last Week.

Last week, director James Gunn initiated filming for ‘Superman’ (with the working title ‘Legacy’ now dropped), delighting fans by revealing the revamped ‘S’ emblem adorning the hero’s updated costume on social media.

The frosty insignia hinted at the wintry setting, confirming speculations about the movie’s initial scenes being set in Svalbard, Norway, as Gunn later confirmed. Speaking to a local newspaper, Gunn shared insights into the ongoing filming sequences.

While Gunn refrained from significant spoilers, he did disclose a plot detail that might intrigue fans eager for hints about the upcoming superhero flick.

“We have filmed the first scenes, which are when Superman flees to the ice fortress. We wanted a place that was beautiful and felt like being in the middle of the Arctic, so we looked at several places in the world. But there were many things that sold Svalbard for us over the other places. First, there is the natural beauty. But also the fact that you’ll find a varied landscape here that you won’t find anywhere else. Nature gives a special feeling.”

During recent discussions, Gunn disclosed that curious individuals have been making appearances near the ‘Superman’ set. However, those anticipating a glimpse of David Corenswet donning the iconic superhero suit might find themselves disappointed. Tight security measures seem to be in place, keeping details under wraps for now.

“We have had some who have been curious, yes, who have stood and watched,” he continued. “But that’s perfectly fine. And that’s a big difference. Because being interested in just watching is something completely different than when you have people trying to sneak into the set to take pictures that they can make money from by selling online.”

While we do have an official set snap accompanying this article, it’s not exactly a spoiler!

In addition to the star-studded lineup of Superman, which includes Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, Nathan Fillion as Green Lantern Guy Gardner, and Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho, recent announcements have added more depth to the ensemble.

Sara Sampaio joins as Lex’s confidante and lover, Eve Teschmacher, while Skyler Gisondo steps into the role of Jimmy Olsen. Additionally, María Gabriela de Faría is set to portray Angela Spica/The Engineer, a member of the anti-hero team The Authority.

Rumors swirl around Milly Alcock’s Supergirl making a debut, possibly teasing her own solo venture in the future. However, this remains unconfirmed.

Director James Gunn hints at an exploration of Superman’s duality, delving into both Clark Kent and the Man of Steel personas. With the introduction of these new characters, it’s speculated they’ll serve as Superman’s ‘super friends,’ though their exact roles in the storyline are yet to be revealed.

“Overjoyed to be announcing the start of principal photography on SUPERMAN today, February 29, which just so happens to be – coincidentally and unplanned – Superman’s birthday,” Gunn captioned the logo photo. “When I finished the first draft of the script, I called the film ‘Superman: Legacy.’ By the time I locked the final draft, it was clear the title was SUPERMAN,” he added. “Making our way to you July 2025.”

plot thickens with each announcement; fans are left eagerly anticipating what’s to come in the latest instalment of the Superman franchise. With the promise of exploring Superman’s complex dual-life and the introduction of an array of beloved characters, excitement is building for what promises to be an epic cinematic adventure.
