Supergirl Series Star Melissa Benoist Comments on Milly Alcock Taking Over Iconic Role in DCU Film.

Milly Alcock, known for her role in House of The Dragon, is set to don the iconic cape as Supergirl in the upcoming DCU film helmed by James Gunn and Peter Safran. Her debut is expected in Superman (previously titled Superman: Legacy) before headlining her own Woman of Tomorrow movie in the future.

Milly Alcock Supergirl

Alcock succeeds Sasha Calle, who briefly portrayed the character in The Flash. Notably, Supergirl has been previously portrayed on screen by Helen Slater in 1984’s Supergirl: The Movie and Laura Vandervoort in Smallville.

However, the longest-running and beloved portrayal of the Girl of Steel is by Melissa Benoist, who portrayed Kara Zor-El in The CW’s Supergirl series from 2015 to 2021.

In a recent interview with Screen Rant, Benoist shared her thoughts on Alcock taking on the role of Supergirl in the cinematic universe. Although she didn’t directly mention Alcock, Benoist emphasized the value of multiple interpretations of the character.

“I think any and all takes on the character are valuable because of what she stands for. Supergirl as an entity is iconic for a reason and has been since the ’50s. I personally think that every iteration of her is valuable for young women to see, and hopefully [with] every take on her, someone will see themselves in it.”

Actress and playwright Ana Nogueira is currently immersed in crafting the script for ‘Woman of Tomorrow.’ However, the film is still without a director attached, at least as far as current information suggests. Details regarding the helmer for this project are expected to surface ‘in the coming weeks.’

Supergirl Evolution

The Supergirl reboot, announced by James Gunn and Peter Safran during a studio press day in January of last year, forms part of the ‘Gods and Monsters’ DCU slate unveiling. Drawing inspiration from Tom King’s acclaimed comic book series of the same name released in 2022, the project promises an exciting revitalization of the iconic character.

Said Gunn at the time, “In our series we see the difference between Superman who was sent to Earth and raised by loving parents from the time he was an infant, versus Supergirl who was raised on a rock, a chip off Krypton, and watched everyone around her die and be killed in terrible ways for the first 14 years of her life, and then came to Earth when she was a young girl. She’s much more hardcore, she’s not exactly the Supergirl we’re used to seeing.”

As the Woman of Tomorrow project takes shape and the search for its director continues, anticipation builds for this revitalization of Supergirl in the DC cinematic universe. With Ana Nogueira at the helm of the script and the backing of James Gunn and Peter Safran, the film promises to offer a fresh perspective on the beloved character.
