just under a month, Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire will hit theatres, poised to compete with the domestic opening weekend numbers of Ghostbusters: Afterlife from 2021. Boxoffice Pro’s latest forecast predicts the sequel to rake in between $35 million and $49 million at the start of its theatrical run, potentially reaching a total of $96 million to $144 million.
To match Afterlife’s $44-million opening in November 2021, Frozen Empire needs to lean towards the higher end of these predictions. Afterlife capitalized on this momentum, earning an additional $35 million over the Thanksgiving holiday. Even if Frozen Empire lands on the lower end of its forecast, it would still boast the third-best opening in the franchise’s history.

Adding to Frozen Empire’s appeal is the return of original Ghostbusters Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, and Ernie Hudson, reprising their iconic roles. Hudson recently teased fans about Winston Zeddemore’s role in the new film, sharing insights in an exclusive interview with Empire.
Winston’s a wealthy guy now, and he’s funding research into new technology and the science behind ghostbusting. When the world is threatened… ‘Who you gonna call?’ He suits up with the rest of them.
Reign of the Frozen Empire
Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire is poised to secure a medal-worthy debut at the box office, whether it hits the high or low end of its predicted opening weekend numbers. Surprisingly, the 2016 female-led Ghostbusters remake currently holds the franchise’s best opening record with $46 million domestically, followed closely by Afterlife’s $44 million. Ghostbusters II (1989) trails behind in third place with $29.5 million.
However, a robust opening weekend doesn’t always guarantee the most profitable theatrical run, as demonstrated by the original 1984 film. Despite earning only $13.6 million in its opening weekend, Ghostbusters went on to become a comedy classic, grossing a franchise-high of $229.2 million domestically. The inclusion of the original Ghostbusters in Frozen Empire, including the return of Dan Aykroyd as Mr. Ray Stantz, bodes well for its box office prospects.
“Ray’s been retired! He’s got fitness problems, insurance problems – Winston’s the shot-caller now, and he decides Ray should step back from the ghostbusting frontline and just be an advisor. Ray does not like this. Gozer’s gone, but there’s an equally terrible threat emerging from Queens – by way of the Indus Valley – and Ray wants to be out there, driving the Cadillac.”
As Frozen Empire gears up for its highly anticipated release, the Ghostbusters franchise stands at a crossroads of nostalgia and innovation. Will the return of beloved characters and the allure of a chilling new adventure be enough to propel Frozen Empire to box office glory?
