Universal Pictures has tapped Gareth Edwards to direct the upcoming Jurassic World reboot, following David Leitch’s departure from the project under amicable terms after initial talks.

According to Deadline, the new instalment is set to offer a completely fresh take on the franchise, with reports suggesting it’s a complete reboot that’s being fast-tracked at Universal.

Furthermore, it’s been revealed that neither Chris Pratt nor Bryce Dallas Howard from the previous cast, nor original trilogy actors Jeff Goldblum, Laura Dern, and Sam Neill, are expected to return for this new chapter of the franchise.

The Creator

Gareth Edwards, known for his work on Star Wars: Rogue One, Godzilla, and Monsters, recently directed The Creator, starring John David Washington, set against a backdrop of human-robot AI warfare. Despite its lackluster box office performance, The Creator boasts impressive special effects and is deemed worthy of a viewing, albeit with room for improvement in its storytelling.

Specializing in visual effects, Edwards managed to deliver The Creator with a remarkable production value on a modest $80 million budget, surpassing expectations compared to higher-budget films. The movie’s nomination for Best Visual Effects at the Oscars underscores Edwards’ prowess in this domain, making his involvement in Jurassic World a logical and potentially cost-effective decision.

The script for Jurassic World is penned by David Koepp, writer of the first two Jurassic Park movies, with Steven Spielberg and Frank Marshall returning as producers. Edwards’ impressive pitch has won over Spielberg and Marshall, pending finalization of the deal, signalling progress for the upcoming movie.

As we await further developments on Gareth Edwards’ involvement in the Jurassic World reboot, one can’t help but wonder about the direction this beloved franchise will take under his direction. With his track record of delivering visually stunning spectacles and the backing of seasoned industry veterans like David Koepp, Steven Spielberg, and Frank Marshall, there’s certainly cause for optimism.
