Hollywood’s Godzilla Movies are fun says Takashi Yamazaki
In a candid chat with Empire, Yamazaki, the creative force behind the brooding ‘Godzilla Minus One,’ dished out his thoughts on the Monsterverse mayhem. While his film channels the darker tones of Toho’s original Godzilla saga, Yamazaki couldn’t resist acknowledging the sheer ‘fun’ factor of Hollywood’s spin-offs.
Yamazaki praised the Monsterverse filmmakers for their inventive take on the iconic IP.
“Hollywood interpretation of Godzilla is a very interesting use of the IP,” Yamazaki tells the site. “It can endure and survive many different interpretations. To me, it’s a more fun version of what Godzilla can be – the classic Toho version did explore something like that at one point in its history.”
“Within that genre, I think they do a good job of [balancing] what the humans do, versus what the kaiju are doing.”
Adam Wingard on Godzilla Minus One
Directed by Adam Wingard, ‘Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire’ promises a kaiju showdown for the ages, complete with unexpected alliances and epic battles. Inspired by the buddy cop dynamic of ‘Lethal Weapon,’ it’s set to star Rebecca Hall, Brian Tyree Henry, and a host of other talented actors.
The publication also snagged an interview with Wingard, eager to hear his thoughts on Godzilla Minus One. Despite its epic portrayal of the King of Monsters, Wingard acknowledges it’s a departure from the Titan’s usual antics, leaving him utterly impressed.
“It was fantastic. It’s one of the best Godzilla movies I’ve ever seen,” Wingard states. “Their take on Godzilla is so different than mine. I’m following the later ’60s, 70s Showa pattern, where Godzilla is the hero character.”
“In Minus One, Godzilla reacts in a way that’s metaphorical to what the characters are going through. It’s such a different movie than ours tonally. You’re getting more Godzilla now than ever, but you’re seeing all sides of him. It’s really super-cool.”
Mark your calendars for March 29, 2024, when ‘Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire’ stomps its way into theatres!
