Today, the official announcement from Mobile Suit Gundam Seed Freedom revealed groundbreaking news: the latest feature film in the Mobile Suit Gundam franchise has soared to the top, becoming the highest-grossing movie in the anime series!
Since its release on January 26th, “Mobile Suit Gundam Seed Freedom” has captivated audiences in Japan, amassing a staggering 2,684,435,390 yen (17.96 million USD) from 1,635,481 admissions.
Since its release on January 26th, 2024, “Mobile Suit Gundam Seed Freedom” has been rewriting the history books of the 45-year-old Gundam anime franchise.
Within the first ten days, the movie sold a remarkable 1.21 million tickets. Following this initial success, an additional 420,000 tickets were sold in the subsequent eight days, including screenings in 4DX, MX4D, and Dolby Cinema formats, which commenced on February 9th.
With these impressive numbers, “Mobile Suit Gundam Seed Freedom” has now claimed the title of the highest-grossing film in the Gundam franchise. It surpassed the previous record-holders, “Mobile Suit Gundam: Encounters in Space” (1982) and “Mobile Suit Gundam Hathaway,” in terms of box office earnings.
Upon its debut, “Mobile Suit Gundam Seed Freedom” took the Japanese theaters by storm, landing at No.1 in 352 theaters across the country. It achieved a record-breaking 1,065,983,130 yen (7.23 million USD) in revenue from 634,182 admissions.
Set in the Cosmic Era timeline, the movie explores the conflict between two groups of humans: Coordinators, who possess enhanced abilities due to genetic modification, and Naturals, who are born without such enhancements. Amidst this backdrop, the Destiny Plan is proposed, sparking a war. However, the rejection of this plan becomes crucial in safeguarding humanity’s aspirations and future freedom.
