Principal Photography Begins for James Cameron’s Avatar 4, Set for Worldwide Release in December 2029

Amid anticipation for the Avatar threequel, the filming journey for Avatar 4 kicks off with a heartening update from the franchise’s Colonel Quaritch.

Stephen Lang, the actor portraying Colonel Quaritch, took to Instagram to share a behind-the-scenes glimpse, signaling the commencement of principal photography for Avatar 4. In the photo, Lang is seen donning a motion capture suit adorned with Colonel Quaritch’s name, accompanied by the caption, “Deja Blu all over again,” a nod to his character and the logo on the suit.

Fans eagerly embraced the post, expressing excitement for the upcoming epic sci-fi blockbuster and anticipating what lies ahead in the cinematic universe.

Stephen Lang’s Instagram post aligns with recent updates from Avatar franchise director James Cameron regarding the progress of Avatar 4. Cameron revealed that despite initial plans to commence filming after Avatar 3’s release, portions of Avatar 4 have already been shot. This unexpected decision stemmed from a narrative choice involving a significant time jump in the fourth installment.

In an interview with People, Cameron elaborated on the time jump, stating, “We even did part of movie four because our young characters are all going to have a big time jump in movie four.” He explained that the portion depicting their return after six years is yet to be filmed and will commence post-Avatar 3 release.

Avatar 4 has encountered multiple delays since its announcement in 2010, with the latest attributed to industry strikes last June. Despite setbacks, Cameron and producer Jon Landau announced in 2022 the completion of the first act, impressing executives at 20th Century Studios with Cameron’s script.

Scheduled for release 20 years after the groundbreaking original, Avatar 4 is anticipated to continue the franchise’s legacy, with the first film holding the title of the highest-grossing film ever made, grossing $2.92 billion worldwide.

Stephen Lang Reprises Role for Highly Anticipated Avatar 4 Sequel

Stephen Lang will join returning cast members Sam Worthington as Jake Sully, Zoë Saldaña as Neytiri, Sigourney Weaver as Kiri, and Britain Dalton as Lo’ak in Avatar 4. Dalton will also narrate the next two sequels. The cast wrapped filming for Avatar 3 during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic, with director James Cameron describing post-production as ‘hectic.’

Avatar 3 introduces new tribes, including those based on fire and wind, setting the stage for the subsequent sequel. While rumors suggest the title may be ‘The Seed Bearer,’ an official title for the third installment has yet to be announced.

Avatar 4 opens in theaters on Dec. 21, 2029.
