Golden Globe nominee Daisy Edgar-Jones shines in the new trailer for Twisters, the highly anticipated sequel to the 1996 tornado thriller Twister, starring Helen Hunt and Bill Paxton. Set to hit theatres on July 19, 2024, Twisters sees Edgar-Jones take on the role of Kate Cooper, leading an ensemble cast that includes Glen Powell, David Corenswet, Kiernan Shipka, Maura Tierney, Anthony Ramos, Tunde Adebimpe, Manini Gupta, and more.

Directed by Lee Isaac Chung (known for Minari) and penned by Mark L. Smith (writer of The Midnight Sky), Twisters brings together a talented team with a unique perspective on the storm-chasing narrative. Chung’s upbringing in rural America, which inspired his Oscar-nominated film Minari, made him an ideal choice for director, given his firsthand experience with tornadoes. Meanwhile, Smith’s script caught the attention of none other than Steven Spielberg, who personally championed the project after being impressed with the writing.

The film primarily focuses on the daughter of the characters portrayed by Hunt and Paxton in the original Twister. Following in her parents’ footsteps, she embarks on a storm-chasing journey that leads her dangerously close to the tornadoes.

Daisy Edgar-Jones, who recently received acclaim for her performances in Where the Crawdads Sing and Fresh, brings depth to her portrayal of Kate Cooper. With notable roles in television series like War of the Worlds, Normal People, and Under the Banner of Heaven, Edgar-Jones continues to captivate audiences with her versatile talent. She is also set to star in Daniel Minahan’s upcoming drama On Swift Horses alongside Jacob Elordi and Will Poulter.

Original Twister

Twister 1996

The original Twister, directed by Jan de Bont and written by Michael Crichton and Anne-Marie Martin, starred Helen Hunt and Bill Paxton in the lead roles. The ensemble cast also included Jami Gertz, Cary Elwes, Alan Ruck, Jeremy Davies, Todd Field, Sean Whalen, and Philip Seymour Hoffman.

Released in 1996, Twister was a massive success at the box office, grossing over $495 million and ranking as the second-highest-grossing film of the year. Notably, it was among the earliest movies to be released on DVD. The film received positive reviews and garnered Academy Award nominations for Visual Effects and Sound.

Despite its success, an official sequel did not materialize, although Helen Hunt had pursued developing a sequel that she would write and direct. However, the studios opted for a legacy sequel instead, focusing on the child of the original film’s main characters.

Now, over two decades later, fans can anticipate the release of Twisters, the highly awaited sequel set to hit theatres on July 19, 2024.
